Hi all,

Normally lurk in the horsey bit but think I need your help!!

Ok here goes - My OH is the local gardener and was offered a spaniel on Monday. Dog is 9, been a working dog all its life a bit stiff in one of its back legs so ready to retire have snuggles etc. We already have a fox hound x beagle, no one at the dogs trust would have him as they are against hunting blah blah blah.

So OH does occasionally go shooting and beagle x is way way too hyper so we have taken the spaniel. Well he is the softest dog in the whole world!! Very honest and just wants to sit on your feet all the time. I have (hope this is right) ordered some dog cortaflex this morning to try and ease his joints.

Are there any tips/hints that we should know/consider whilst he is here (hopefully forever, but on 2 weeeks trial). There were no whoopsys this morning in the kitchen overnight. Is it worth putting him on Cod liver oil too??

Thank you all in advance

Jo

Springer or cocker spaniel?

At least at 9 he'll already be very settled, comapred to a pup

No harm in trying him on the oil see how he does. I've just started one of mine on tablets containing glucosamine which was recomended by mygroomer

Cocker or Springer - the larger one ha ha ha.

Will get some pictures sorted he's such a gentleman. I want to see him work. The most exciting thing is - he used to go hacking with the lady from the estate. The beagle x is useless at hacking and winds up my horse.

All three of my now dead old dogs has got'n acupunctured for different reasons, they need four to ten sessions and the effect last in around a year, but afterwards I've allways been able to stop giving the Glucosamin and similar stuff and they behaved as if they where (almost) puppies again.

As an example when I showed my eleven year old Norwegian Buhund in the veteran class, some years ago, after seeing her first lap around the ring the british judge didn't believe me when I first told him her age, he thought I got my english all wrong.

My vets has also allways told me how much younger than their age my old dogs look.
In this and last years january my old cat (14) got some acupunture because a little part of her back has grown together, before treatment she had difficulties jumping up on almost anything, afterwards she climbs the scratchingposts all the way up to the ceiling.

So I really recommend trying acupuncture.

Hi

We have had get success using bioflow magnetic colars. We use one on our 13 year old flat coat retriever and it's really made a difference to him. We also used one on our sadly deceased Dobermann who suffered from stiff hips and stiff front legs due to endless digging for rabbits!!. I would highly recommend them.

Hope this helps

A quick update,

cortaflex still not arrived - however bought some devils claw to try and take some of the discomfort away and he is moving better. His papers arrive tonight so will know his breeding etc.

Also took him to the doggy parlour and the lady trimmed his feet and claws she found several thorns in his foot, all had gone septic so removed them and now bathing twice a day in salty water.

Will definately look into the magnetic collars, I have a magnetic brushing boots somewhere that we used so have a bit of confidence in them.
