if some of you had decided to actually JOIN the BHS long before giving a small donation to a "media case" i'm sure the money could be better utilised...

just my opinion..

Better late than never surely.....

[/ QUOTE ]

almost too late in this case, wouldn't you agree?

[/ QUOTE ]

I was referring to peoples donations to either the BHS/just giving or joining of the BHS.

Membership of organisations such as the BHS seems to be promoted relatively rarely on this forum by anybody (forgive me if this perception is wrong); so is it not a little holier than thou to start castigating people for their supposed failings just when they're realising the benefits and making the effort?

so i'm being holier than thou by assuming HORSE owners should know who the BHS are??

i dont think so.....

I don't know why people donating by just giving are getting so much stick

Lee is going to let me know when they get the money, and he has said some will go to Carrot and Spud.

JM, I was aware of the BHS but was not aware you could be a "member", and I'm still not sure wht it entails

Maybe you could do a post saying what kind of stuff it involves?

I have noticed quite a lot of people saying they have renewed, joined or are going to join as a result of this, and have also donated.

Also, I did look and £17 is the cheapest membership, it doesn't seem a lot, but some people don't have that atm.

I've sent a message to over two thousand people on FB this afternoon (before reading this), promoting BHS membership and stating what the new target for the Just Giving is.

I've been a member of the BHS for years and years, and it didn't stop me donating to this "cause".

The BHS has a tag line "for the welfare of the horse" and that is it's main motive! Unfortunately, it is rare that anyone mentions them when referring to "rescue" cases, and the obvious RSPCA and WHW seem to get the most mentions and recommendations!

In this instance, I am glad that the BHS have had some positive publicity, which hopefully, will extend it's membership, and provide help and support to all equines in need, and that the horses that were rescued, have been given a chance by a very worthwhile organisation.

I suspect many know who the BHS are, but they don't know about the benefits or consider them to be sufficiently important to justify the £50. That's their affair, but perhaps it's up to members to *gently* suggest that they change this view. My friends have only considered joining for the insurance - call that selfish if you will, but perhaps my telling them about this case will go some way towards changing their views. OTOH, telling them that it's *their* fault that more horses can't be rescued might make them a tad defensive.

I am ignorant

I joined me and daughter for Christmas, but apart from scanning the mags they send, I don't really think about it

.

And I call myself a horse lover.

I'll also give to the JustGiving thingy. Not bothered where it goes, so long as it helps horses.

Well I don't know if it's just me, but I don't know exactly what being a member involves, I think a post where people who are members can say why they're members, what they get out of it, etc.. would be a good idea?

Just about to donate. I am also a BHS Gold member but am very happy for the money in this case to go directly to supporting these horses. They deserve the best fresh start that money can buy. I will be equally happy if whoever is responsible for allocating the funds feels that Carrot and Spud are 'set up' and channels the cash into the general BHS coffers.

I agree that it would be fantastic if all horsey people joined the BHS as a given, but if people are galvanised into donating by a high profile case such as this then I feel it can only be a positive thing.

I think it would be a good idea, and i think that you, as its your efforts with the justgiving, should speak to Lee about it and see what he can do with HHO about promoting their membership through the forum. I suspect you are not alone in not realising what their membership encompasses so anything that helps spread the word it great. As they say there is no such thing as bad publicity.

As someone said somewhere else (sorry, whoever it was!), would it not be good also to channel some of this momentum to the boys' new home? Any bright ideas on how this might be done, as we're not publicising it on here (though it has been elsewhere)?

[/ QUOTE ]

That was me. It's just a shame we don't know where they are (although I completely understand); however, I know at least one member does know.

An amazing effort

- just to let you all know when I told Lee last night that you were all donating (and we didn't have details or where or how) he said to direct it to him and he will make sure that it goes to the place caring for Carrot and Spud.

So every penny you give will go direct to make Carrot and Spud better - paying for their vets, farrier, dentist, feed etc etc

I'm sure they would give you all a big Carrot and Spud cuddle for your help

- and they both like a cuddle

That's brilliant, as I think whoever has taken them in really deserves it!

edit - so you've seen

Surely if people want to donate now thats up to them am sure the BHS will love you for having a go at people for donating their money, no matter what anyone says its better now than never sometimes it takes something like this to make people donate to charitys by seeing something in the flesh like this etc i am sure the BHS will be grateful for money no matter what the reason behind people giving it is

That's a good idea. And in addition, here's some light reading for anyone who likes their hacking:
