Hiya,

I'm just interested to know how many of you go against what is common sense and the 'right' thing to do when it comes to horses?

I have two, as most of you know, one is a bit of a superstar and the other is blind in one eye but a good hacking horse. I'm in a situation where I can really no longer keep two. It's been backwards and fowards for the last 6 months but I'm working away 3/4 times a week and maybe moving out of my boyfriends soon. Even if I don't I realise that spending every day with horses is no longer an option.

Someone on here wants Oscar for a good price and I know that if I sell Oscar and keep Ty, I just won't ride anymore as a a) don't really trust him and b) don't get the 'thrill' of riding him - bad as that sounds. I love Oscar to bits (as I do Ty) but he's never going to be a 'quiet hack on your own' type of horse as he can be nappy. I can deal with it but I ask myself whether its really what I want long term.

So I'm trying to make a decision on whether I just sell both, share over the winter and then look to get a nice 15/15.2 cob cob x that I can have lots of fun on and enjoy riding again. Also something that doesn't have to be ridden all the time to keep fit.

Has anyone else had to go through something similar?

I've read nearly all of your posts about your two boys. You are obviously going through a tough time in your personal life at the moment. The thing to do is to ask yourself if either horse is actually what you want. I know you love them both, but if you aren't going to ride Ty because you don't trust him, can you keep him just as a pet? I would guess the answer is no. If you just want an all rounder that you can hack on your own, then obviously Oscar is not for you and if you have the chance of selling him to a good home, then perhaps you should let him go. Only you know what your long terms goals are regarding your riding, but from all your posts it doesn't seem you are actually having a lot of fun from your two and at the end of the day that is what it's all about. Rehoming Ty would be much harder than finding a new home for Oscar.

I'm seriously considering selling both, getting a good share over the winter/spring while my job is so busy and then maybe getting a nice all rounder next year.

Horses just seen to cause me so much trouble and worry and I've got the chance of doing great things with my career now. If I stay with OH then we have more quality time together, I can carry on having lessons and progressing and if we don't I can go buy myself my own flat next year.

Bit of a no brainer really but a decision that I should have made 6 months ago I think.

As you say a bit of a no brainer. Sounds like you have made your mind up to sell both and FWIW I think you have made the right decision. It will give you time to get your life sorted out and decide what sort of horse you want in the future. I think you might have trouble selling Ty though but good luck.

I had loads of calls on Ty - priced him at £1000 with tack and rugs and I think that's a fair price for a good hacking horse. Bizarre as it really is all about bonding with a horse - his sharers love him to bits but I just don't trust ihm!

I have read a lot of your posts and agree with Jaylen. I think if I was in your situation and someone I liked had offered to buy Oscar it would be too good to turn down. I would worry about selling Ty though, as if he is not a plod it will be very difficult to find a hacking home for him and he could end up in bad hands. It's a shame his two sharers can't take him on fully for you. I think you should share after that until you know what's happening in your personal/work life as it would be less stressful for you. Hope it all works out ok in the end.

You'd be suprised how many people want something that's not dead from the neck down! Ty is awesome out hacking - doesn't bolt, rear or buck and just loves it. He's just a bit bolshy when he moves yard but if you're blind in one eye that's understandable. He will be harder to rehome but I'm sure there's someone out there who would love him.

Its a hard one as you know your horses well and love them dearly. You have to make sure if you do sell them you do not punish yourself for doing it and that you sell them to good homes so you are not always thinking what if....I spose the thing is good horses are hard to come by too so you have to be sure...take a good long think about it before doing anything and if you still think it is the right idea then go for it....

as for doing things the right way - I never do....never have and always sort of gone against the grain....there are no rules with horses...thats whats so great about them

good luck with things...

Hope I didn't offend you about Ty. I'm sure he is lovely. It was just as you said that you didn't trust him and after reading older posts I thought it would make him unsuitable for a novice person which unfortunately most hacking homes tend to be.

I'll go back to the original question in the post and say I have never had to make a decision like this myself so any of my advise is only opinion anyway.

No you didn't offend me at all. I wouldn't sell either of mine as novice rides anyway - but don't agree that most hacking homes want a novice plod.....I would say that I'm a happy hacker in all honesty and my issues with Ty are due to us trying to jump, him not really liking it due to his spavins (which i didn't know about at the time) and reacting badly. all opinions appreciated!

Looks like I may have found a home for Ty already - somebody who wanted him before but due to personal reasons couldn't take him.....fingers crossed.
