Went to meet my friend today with her 1 year old staffie cross and to begin with, things were perfect, they were playing but also doing there own thing and I was really proud of Scoobie for just walking away if it got too much.
We were strolling along and I turn around and Scoobie is mounting my friends dog! And then it turned into a full on scrap with neither of them letting go!
Managed to pull them apart and they both have a few cuts on one of their ears and it looked a lot worse than it was, both fine and wanting to go off and play again!

They are both entire males but Scoobie has never ever shown aggression and dominance before.

I am now telling my parents the dog needs neutering now! I want those balls off! We were planning on doing it anyway but I want it done now!

Think it just looked and sounded a lot worse than it was, but it was horrible.

On the plus side Scoobie came back every time I asked him too so he is improving.

How can I get Scoobie used to other male dogs? I don't want him to be put off but also don't want to have avoid other male dogs forever. I want those balls off now!
Feel like a very useless owner right now.

Some Piccies before it went wrong though

Scoobie overstepped the mark and got told off quite rightly for it. Unfortunately, he tried it on with a dog with a heavy dose of terrier blood and those boys don't back down for nothing! ;) How old is scoobie? I would definitely get those nuts off. He has physiological urges that he cannot be responsible for and must be driving him insane! He may calm down after castration and may not get as excitable and wound up by other dogs - male or female.

OMG I agree with BS again... this cannot continue

I would get Scoobie done ASAP (is he a rescue BTW? If so why on earth did they not castrate him before they rehomed him?) and I reckon things will improve no end :)

Gorgeous Scoobie pics BTW, we really do need more of them you know :) Try not to be too upset, I know it is shocking and horrible when dogs fight but like BS said, he overstepped the mark and rightly got told to stop it, that is all

Shocking;)

I really don't get any pleasure with people agreeing with me, my raison d'etre is to try and irritate as many people as is possible!:D;)

For what it's worth, my rescue Yorkshire terrier had his nuts off but he still gets carried away sometimes, and last week mounted my Springer (she is at least female lol) but she bit him in the face and I have had a vets bill! Get the balls off by all means, but it may not completely stop him feeling frisky.

Mounting isn't always sexual - the dog most likely to hump other dogs (and her bed or toy) is a speyed bitch, who is the dominant dog of all the dogs at OH's work. Our entire male (occasional stud as well) is humped by her every so often...

Mounting/humping is often dominance related, so the removal of balls (although helpful) won't necessary solve it entirely. Obviously socialising would be easier without...

He was a naughty boy today. He got what he deserved but I think he was also a little bit pis*ed off as well.
Scoobie is 2 and a half where as Lex is one. He was a rescue but I don't think he was in the kennels long enough. They don't pay for castration as a whole I don't think but make contributions and bought in that rule just after we got scoobie and the time expired. They did pay for his first jabs and micro chipping. I'd rather they neutered him tbh!

I think it was dominance thing but I don't know why it started with Lex, he's fine with everyone else, including bitches that have just come out of heat. We've done greyhound walks with 30 other dogs and he's been fine. Today was obviously feeling a bit like a an anti social dominant and annoyed git! And stubborn as well, he didn't back down either!
Bloody animals! I want his balls off but as he is a family dog, I won't be the one paying the bill but I might find the cash if my parents are struggling (massive heating bill just came in!).

I want to keep him socialised with other dogs so am going to work on it as after having two dogs who didn't get on with other dogs after being attacked, I don't want this to happen again.

He's feeling sorry for himself and is now quite stiff but he's eating and drinking so he should be okay. Gentle exercise this weekend I think.

Heres how I see this and I'm happy to be told I'm wrong....
Yes you should get his balls off but I think this is unlikely to be the full issue of the altercation.
Terrier breeds are annoying, persistent, over enthusiastic little sods...especially that breed, entire, and of that age. They don't give in and will push and push and push. Sighthounds just dont have that level of energy/stamina and although they are very placid will only be pushed so far and once they are pushed to the point of total annoyance they won't back down either. Today was very hot = tiring quicker and more irritable. Staffy would be oblivious to this fact because....well...its a one year old staff! :p
So other than getting the balls off asap (which you should definately do anyway) I would say that in future to be more observant as to how far scooby is being pushed, dont let the staff keep on and on and on to play with him, it's not really fair to expect him not to try and assert some dominance to get him to pack it in. (I realise this isn't your job because the staff isn't yours but really he should have been told to calm it down or placed back on the lead if he doesn't respond to being told.) Instead you can put scooby back on the lead though if it looks like he's done with play and is just being pestered.
I realise I have assumed a fair bit in this post...so feel free to tell me I'm way off mark and scooby was the boisterous one instigating play if that is the case....
:)

I agree 100% with Vizzy:D staff are way to ott for their own good, there is only so much a dog can take, I would def get him neutered but as Vizzy suggests be vigilant in regard to type of play and body language and step in before it gets out of hand, either reprimand and calm down or place back on the lead.

LMAO.....I was actually scanning the pics and thinking even from looking at them the staff is being a typical staff and the lurch boy actually looks like he is trying to take a few breathers and the staff being a staff is right up in his face:D then I read your reply......:D

Think you've hit the nail on the head there Viz
Scoobs likes to play but only for a little while, he'd much rather chase ducks and try and take on a swan!!
The staff is lovely but very very boisterous and OTT like you said and I think Scoob had had enough.
I'd called him away a few times but obviously not enough and it all got too much for him.
Next time i'll be more careful, first time he snapped like that and it shocked us all I think.
Dog fights are horrible to listen too and I wasn't sure on how to separate them! Managed it in the end.

Think Scoob should stick to the company of his own kind in future, but at least I now know hos much Scoobs can take. I'm not used to dogs that will play since my last two dogs couldn't tolerate other dogs near them after being attacked.
Think everyone learnt something today.
Scoobs gets pi**ed off very easily
Lex is a hooligan who i've just found out is staffie x pit bull

My friend couldn't stop apologizing and feels very guilty. Think her dog has come off worse though and is worried Lex will be taken away due to being half pit bull :(
