My mum just gave me the idea a was sayin I need some shelter in this heat for the unicorns. She suggested a gazeboo . Though it was a brilliant idea they would be scared at first but so long as you secure it properly so it won't blow away. Thought I would share it with you Haha

Sounds agood Idea, but i would be worried if there was a bit of argy bargy init or around it, wouldnt take much to have poles, canvas and cord every where for them to get hooked up in.

Mine wouldn't be scared, but i'd be put off by what might happen if they had an itch or similar & ended tangled up in it.

Ye true but I think its worth a try and just watch what they do . They might just enjoy the shade . May have to rethink this idea Haha

Oh no ! I have seen one for £15 at Tesco I might try it they might not bother with it and just enjoy the shade otherwise al be telling the mister that hes building a shelter all weekend Haha ! GOIng to hate me ha

The OH had the same idea as this a few weeks back saying I should get one as a shelter....I was unsure and havent as yet,so interesting thred :) My fear was it's limited structural stability as mentioned - pulling/rubbing etc. May be worth a shot though if I can get one at good price!

I'm going to attach two of the back poles to the fence or side of the stable to make it sturdy maybe even whack 4fence posts at each corner and drill it onto the posts ? SUrely that would work

Tried that ! It lasted all of half an hour:( Little beasts rubbed up against the poles and nibbled and pulled at the canopy untill the whole thing collasped

This i imagine ^^^^^^ is what most horses would do! they aint very grateful beasts!! :D

Sorry but what a stupid idea.
All it takes is for nags to pull poles down, thing to collapse with nags inside and mayhem to follow.
Enjoy your vet bill!

I had a protech shelter...pretty good and would buy again but it wouldn't be very mobile....once its up and fixed to the ground I felt that it we have moved it the frame may have lost strength.

I think the company 'dancover' do a 'carport' with the same frame and material for half the price...you would need to 'horse proof' it.

Wouldn't the horns poke holes in the material or get stuck? ;):p

Phew, was concerned that there would be unicorns running around with home made flags attached to their horns. :D I'm sure they will love their new gazebo :p

If you were thinking of lashing it to the back or side of your stables, why not just build an open sided lean to against them? Using something like old telegraph poles and coragated (sp) roofing.

Haha ! Wish my little 8hh Palomino mini was a unicorn would be hilarious !. Haha that's cheered me up after that sarcastic comment of a unicorn snob earlier !

Thing is a section the field into two parts so could make a decent shelter near the stables but for the second field just need. Something cheap but safe I have heard about hay bales but not sure

Well it sounded sarcastic to me so I apologies. I am not after spending a fortune on a shelter they will destroy anyway and may not use . It was a test a see idea personally if you secure it to fence posts at each corner they are not going to be able to push it down there little ponies

I have seen shelters made from bales, but you have to stake them as you built it to make them secure!!
The other effective shelter is strong fence panels formed in the shape of an X, so they can get to all sides depending on where the sun is, no roof obviously, but if position correctly they wont need it!!

I didn't think you were seriously considering it. You could put up fence poles & just use the roof part of the gazebo, with legs cut off. But might as well build something in that case.

Gazebo would be very risky. False economy. Ideas like this are why the Unicorn is now on the endangered species list...:(

Pop a field shelter up. You can put it in the centre of the field, and have a fence with a gate running through it, so it serves both sections of the field, if you get what I mean?

This ^^^^^ but plural on the bill!
Gazebo ropes will cut/slice thru to the bone like a hot knife thru butter if given half a chance..wind noise may/will unsettle..too many hazzards for my liking...although if its for actual Unicorns, then fine...but surely they would prefer an enchanted forrest??

Haha enchanted forest would be great !. Ah didn't think they had ropes on them. A have a load of spare wood from fencing the arena so might just force the mister to help build one this weekend. Just trying to make life easy for him a feel tight Haha !. And with the straw bales? Or hay what else would I need to make it safe ?

Are you serious? I wouldn't dream of putting a gazebo in a field of horses. Most are made of fabric, metal poles, nylon string, tent pegs... it's like a list of potential hazards for horses to get wrapped up and generally injure themselves with. :(
