He did some work with Alee last night but has not finished yet as they keep getting called out to various different emergencies.

So far he has noticed is that there is an effusion in the stifle.

Can someone explain this please?

Effusion is swelling. Basically there is swelling around the stifle area. They will probably x-ray the joint. How old is the horse? If young, they might be thinking possible OCD, which is common enough in stifles.

She is 4. And had the same stifle x rayd last year not due to lameness as such but just because I was worried that she was a little short on that leg.
What is OCD and will it cause a problem to her long term.
God I am worrying now.....

Don't worry! OCD is a developmental problem, where the joint cartilage doesn't form properly and flakes off, causing swelling and pain over time. It is treated by surgery to remove the chips, or by box rest and various drug treatments depending on the circumstance. It is very common, and plenty of horses make full recoveries.

Of course, it might be something else entirely! Sorry to worry you, and good luck.

Have been waiting for an update on Alee. Please let us know as soon as you know something yourself.

Half-Step - really interesting info there, it could relate to one of mine, thank you.

Even if it is OCD, which is only one of many options, the surgery (which is the most aggressive form of treatment) has an 80% recovery rate (to the previous level of work, following post-surgery recovery, i.e. box rest and gradual limited exercise), so it's not that bad.

Fingers' crossed it's not even that!

Grrrrr they have been called out to emergenciess again. I know its not their fault but I just want to know what is wrong with my girl.
They are now definatly seeing her tomorrow at 10.30am come rain or shine!!!
So its another stay over at the vets for her again tonight. Oh well if nothing else its a learning curve for her!!!!
So again vibes please at 10.30 tomorrow......
