I know there have been a lot of threads on about this, so I just thought I would say what I've done to clear a nasty case of thrush over the last few weeks. Shy is prone to thrush *urgh*, but i hope this info may help someone struggling as we were. He also had "white blisters" on his heels, part of the infection I think, and he was very sore. It got out of hand when I was away I think.

Firstly I had the farrier out, and even though Shy is barefoot, got him to trim the frogs to expose the bad areas to the air.

Next, I kept him in for five days (not something a lot of peeps can do I know).

Every day, his hooves were picked out (obviously) and I scrubbed them once a day with a very dilute solution of hibiscrub, for the first three days. This has now been reduced to once a week.

Twice a day I applied a combination of eucalyptus oil and tea tree oil (just used cheap stuff from Boyes tbh), mixed in a spray bottle from Superdrug. Easy peasy.

Once the thrush was under control, and the order had arrived, I started using Red Horse Field Paste before turn out - this has the same combination of essential oils, plus other goodies - wedging it right into the frog.

After two weeks, the difference is amazing. I now just wash them out with hibiscrub once a week, spray the oils on every three days or so, and use the field paste.

I do hope this helps someone out there. :)

I use tea tree oil and eucalyptus oil a lot (olbas oil is good too) it is briliant for thrush. :) Mine are out 24/7 though.

Did you use a carrier oil or just those two oils together? Beau's thrush has dried up with antibac oil and being on semi permanent box rest.

I know there's lots of other treatment, and I've tried quite a few - just this regime has really worked for Shy :)

No carrier oil, just neat essential oils, in a spray bottle.

eucalyptus oil seems to be fab for feet - it's a strong oil and you do have to be careful with it (as in NOT drink it, lol), and mixed with Tea tree together they are very powerful antibacterial and antifungal agents. seem to work better in synergy.

Another vote here for Field Paste. It managed to clear the comedy cob's quite bad thrush completely and this year we're using it in a preventative way. Once or twice a week I bring her in overnight, dry her feet out completely and then pack the field paste in. This time last year her feet were a stinky black mush and this year even in all this wet - touch wood - she's thrush free. Field Paste is miracle stuff :)

I mix up tea tree oil, eucalyptus oil, cider vinegar and water into a spray and use that. Its brilliant.

Incidentally, I have been ripped apart with a bad chest infection and cough this last couple of weeks. In desperation, I was scouring the internet trying to find something to help the cough - and came across folks saying to use eucalyptus oil on the soles of your feet? Now, it sounded weird but I had some and I was desperate so I had a midnight foray into the stables to get it (Arnie was puzzled to say the least) - and it works!!! Apparently the pores on the soles of your feet are big and it can get absorbed easily :D

Yup, eucalyptus is fab for colds, and when I spray Shy's hooves, everyone tells me they can smell it a mile off :o, so maybe it's going up through the sole pores, maybe it's inhalation ? very interesting - animal aromatherapy is about direct intake into the body (oral) and also via inhalation.

Iv been using diluted Milton. Nothing else, just use it when I pick his feet out and that opens up the deep areas and it goes. When it was a deep sulcus I was using Milton and then using wound powder to dry the area out and absorb any more moisture. This seems to be doing well so far :-) I did use neat tea tre oil at one point also but only for a few days consecutively then I didn't need it any more.
