Just had news on Lanky from the Equine Clinic

Oh I didn't realise anyone else was in there, there was just a grey opposite Henry which had it's head down munching the whole time and next to that a bay which looked very sorry for itself. It was very difficult for me as the last time I was there my boy was pts in one of the fields, so it was lovely to see Henry all bright and pleased to see me - even if he did mug me for apples!!

So sorry that Lanky and you are going through all this. I know exactly how you feel, as Lochpearl says we both went through this last year at the same time.

My boy was walking wonkey, slight drop on left hip and my vet suspected OCD due to his age (6) and a growth spurt he had.

He was referred to physio first and the lameness was really obvious on circles so he was again referred to a veterinary hospital near me. They had him for nearly 5 days doing workups. Started with nerve blocks and joint blocks and found both stifles and slight back pain. He then had xrays and ultrasound on both stifles and his spine in lumber region. They said the back pain was secondary to his stifles.

The xrays showed what looked like a bone spur and some rough edges to the cartiledge. They said it could be meniscus damage also. They recommended arthroscopy straight away to see exactly what is going on in there. I agreed to the op as they said the sooner the better, he was straight in on 18 November last year.

The morning of the op I didn't care what they found as long as he survived the GA. I got the call to say out and in recovery and he was calm and well behaved coming out so was pleased at thet. Then later that afternoon got a call from the vet to say pleased to say two healthy joints and no problems in there other than soft tissue inflammation so you can imagine my relief when I had all the scare mongering stories from vets for worst case scenarios!! The worst was all the scary conditions I read about on the internet as to what it could have been once the vet got in there!!!

Flin's aftercare treatment was Cortavet (stronger than cortaflex and only available on prescription and nearly £300 for a 3.8l bottle!!), complete box rest and an IRAP injection into both joints every week to 10 days for 3 lots of injections. Then after the final injection he was allowed out into a tiny paddock. I sedated him for the first time he went out!!! He bucked and bucked! But in his bucks he could lift both legs up same height which before his left hind hung down so I was pleased at his bucks!!!

We started hand walking and physio treatments and by March this year we were back riding again. We had our first dressage competition last weekend.

Althought the stress and the worry at the time, its all come right. The vets bills totalled £5794 and that didn't include the £65 a time for physio or the £150 to my vets prior to referral. The work ups were £1700 the rest was for the operation and IRAP injections. The injection to collect and convert to IRAP was £600 then the injections alone into the joint were £95 a time per joint. In comparison to Lochpearls bill at your vets my bill was twice as much for the same work!!!

I do hope it all comes right for you and Lanky. If there is anything I can answer for you just ask.

We only have 3000 cover. I am guessing probably £150-200 to our normal vet so far, the cost of the referral, the cost of the xrays, ultrasound and nerve blocks, could well be about 800ish like I said. So with the injection into the joint that they are going to do tomorrow, and any subsequent surgery... oh dear. Plus we have to pay for the livery on top ourselves. He is worth it, but you can't magic up money, can you!?

No worries LankyDoodle glad its been of help if only to scare you with the cost! My vets..... I think they saw insurance and £££ signs! Lochpearls bill was half price of mine as we compared like for like and mine was double!!

Her owner and I go to visit at the same time each evening, lol. Be wasn't admitted till Thursday night, and she may well have not been in her stable when you were there Friday as she was with the vets a lot that day.
