This may not seem like much, but today I had my first hack out on my new horse, who I got in early November, and it was absolutely brilliant. I never knew I could be this happy about a simple 15 minute hack in walk, but I am!
Until now, we’ve been focussing on groundwork and schooling, getting to know him and building fitness. He’s been quite spooky in the school over the last few weeks, partly with the wind and partly with riding under lights, so a lot of time has been spent tackling that. I’ve also taken him out for some in hand hacks (all off road), but hadn’t planned to hack until I had someone to go with.
However, when I got to the yard today, the arena was frozen solid, so instead of another in-hand hack, I took the plunge and went out on board for a hack by myself on one of our in hand routes. I knew from his previous owner that he was happy to hack alone, and thought that at the worst I’d just hop off and carry on in hand.
I shouldn’t have worried. He was fantastic. Not spooky at all, and we had a lovely relaxed hack which I think we both enjoyed. It was the perfect start to the year and I’m really excited to get out some more with him. I’m lucky to have brilliant hacking right outside my yard, so there’s plenty to explore.
