Just had the vet out for Gem again.

I can't take this, it is wearing me down so much. I got to the yard this evening and Gem was coughing and breathing like she was the first night she went into the vet college. I felt sick and rang my vet straight away who came out and gave her an injection, her lungs sound exactly the same as they did the first night

There was no point in taking her back to the vets as there is nothing they can do at the moment, she's only been home just over 24 hours. Nina (vet) said it may be because she has changed from the intravenous drugs to different oral drugs in the last 3 days, and the oral drugs weren't right for her possibly now the intravenous ones are wearing off.
I have to inject her in the evenings with norocillin.
I just feel like the worst owner in the world.

I am sorry for complaining and know it sounds like nothing now I've written it down, but yeah, I am just so tired of this. I just want her to be well again.
 
Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear that Gem is poorly again, fingers crossed it is a temporary 'blip', lots of {{vibes}} for Gem.

Why are you the worst owner? You care deeply for Gem, you are doing the best for her, surely that makes you a wonderful owner?
 
Whatever you do, don't blame yourself! It is clear how strong the bond between you and Gem is and that is due to the love and care and time you devote to her. Her health has just been damn bad luck

Dani - I think you need to get her into an outdoor stable ASAP, or, if you can, turn her out. SOMETHING is triggering her and I would think the more fresh air the better.

I have moved her into an outdoor stable tonight, sorry I forgot to post that part. YO said she'd rather Gem didn't go out in the medical paddock as she will churn it up, which is fair enough, so am just hoping the outdoor stable will help, sorry.

Is there anything that is stored near your stable that could be setting her off????

But as Gem has been in for two weeks already it is inevitable that she will run around and ruin the paddock, what with the awful weather we have had recently as well, I do understand why my YO said it and am fine with it...
I was meant to be going out tonight, funnily enough I don't feel like it now lol.
 
Oh D. I am so sorry to hear this.

I can't imagine she'd be doing much running around in her current state of health. If the outdoor stable doesn't do the trick, maybe your YO will then consider allowing her to be turned out.

Thanks everyone, I know I need to keep positive but all these set backs are taking their toll on me.
The reason I feel like an awful owner is because it is obviously something to do with me/my management that sets her off. I spent all of Tuesday gutting her stable, de-cobwebbing, getting rid of all the dust etc. I just feel like I haven't done enough and that it's my fault this has happened, again.

I am pretty disappointed that YO doesnt want the paddock turned up, perhaps she could have a play in the school and graze in hand? Sending lots of healing vibes to Jem and positive vibes to you. You are coping so well. Hx

Can you list your total regime her so we can pick through and see if we can spot something that may be setting her off.

I'm so sorry to read this, but I'm sure once you get the level of drugs sorted out her breathing will calm right down again. Just as a possible aside, did she have different bedding when in hosp? Could it be that a diff batch of shavings/straw/whatever is aggravating it? Does anyone have any paper/cardboard/whatever they use at the hosp that you could steal for a week or so to see if that makes any difference if 24/7 turnout to recuperate isn't a possibility?
 
Oh Dani, stop being so harsh on yourself, I know it's easier to say than do but honestly you are not to blame for Gem's illness. You come across as someone who would do anything for her horse and you are

If you weren't you wouldn't have prepared her stable etc etc now then would you? You and the vets are doing everything to find out what is wrong with her so there isn't much more you can do, other than what you are already - spending time with her and giving her plenty of tlc

i have a tb gelding with recurrant ulcerative lymphangitis , his management up to now has been out by day in at night , but this agravates his condition and after battling with it since he came in in november the vet has advised 24/7 turnout , my yard owner has been very understanding , she has allowed me to turn him out immediatly with my colt for company and the improvement was immediate ,the other liveries have to wait for 24/7 turnout till may and all have understood and not made a fuss
i,m sorry but a horse with severe breathing problems that needs turnout on vets advise should get it , sod the churning up of paddock etc , its the horses wefare that counts most , surely your yard owner can see that? if not maybe your vets could have a word on your behalf?
i hope gem improves soon , i know what its like to be constantly needing vets , worrying half the night and questioning your ability to care for her , all good horse owners will know that feeling , keep up the good work with gem and get badgering that yard owner!
