I have a chihuahua bitch, almost 2 years old. She is like the many other varieties of dogs I've owned over the years, anticipates me going out, a walk is on the cards, a visitor about to arrive etc etc, I've always believed they know far more than we think.

But I have a situation that interests me. I take her to work with me mostly, but 3 days I leave her home for 5 hours.
She has been toilet trained on a puppy pad and has her own toilet area inside, this suits us both as foul winter weather doesn't impress her, and I don't have to worry that she needs the toilet when I'm not there. She never makes a mistake and makes me laugh when playing in the garden will often pop back in for a wee or poo :)

When training her as a puppy, she mastered the wee very quickly, the poo took a bit longer, so every time she did her poo on the pad she had a little bickie. She is now 100% perfect, but the bickie remains after a poo. She is hilarious, she will come and find me elsewhere in the house, scrat her hind legs, bark at me and run to her loo to show me. My daughter says 'she's had a poo and wants paying'

Anyway, her routine is generally a poo first thing, then another just after midday, but, when I'm out she doesn't do the midday poo, when I return home around 5.30 she dashes straight off for a poo and demands payment.

Is she capable of realising a poo whilst on her own brings no reward, so hangs on till I get home. Its quite a feat of reasoning if that's the case, yet it seems like that's exactly what she's doing.

Sorry I've rambled, but I find her behaviour quite fascinating.

I'd find that very plausible tbh! Her reasoning may be more along the lines of, mum rewards me when I do this, so it's good to do around mum, I'll do it when she's back here - rather than understanding that she wouldn't get a reward if you're away - does that make sense? (Did in my head, lol, dog reasoning is odd!)
Bless her!
