My horse is due to have a high trace clip very soon. I have an old jute rug that he could wear in the stable and under his turnout rug in the field, but I'm not sure if this will be enought to keep him warm as I'm not used to using jute.

Will a jute rug keep him warm or should I get him a new type stable/under rug?

Thanks fo any help! :p

I wouldnt put an old jute rug on a horse - not so much from the warmth issue but they were so heavy :(. Everything seemed to end up with rubbed withers :(

Depends how old it is... The older ones were really heavy, the ones I had in the mid 80s had cotton liners and were quite light (and didn't rub withers). They should be quite warm as they trap air in the gaps.. I don't know if I'd use it under a turnout rug - if they get wet they take forever to dry.. I know because my non-horsey mum turned my pony out in his once...

I loved putting my old mare to bed all tucked up in her blankets and jute rug. The blankets always had to be folded exactly right, and it was like a nightly ritual. Today's rugs just don't give the same sense of satisfaction although I'm sure the horses appreciate them more!!
