I’m just musing and thought who better to ask than HHO
For reasons, I really must not knock my nose for the next few months.
Chances of it happening are low anyway as I have a calm horse and ride western.
But if I wanted a hat with a face guard , what are my options? I had a quick google of polo helmets with guards but they seemdesigned to stop impact from balls and mallets rather than protecting your face in a fall. Also that seems to potentially be a no no as you then increase the chance of neck injuries?
My hats both have fixed peaks on them already.
I’m probably just over thinking this but if there was a simple reasonably priced solution I’d go for it.

Look at the full face BMX bike helmets, they are tested to similar standards and are similar construction to riding hats. The Bell super 6 is low at the back as well, just like a riding hat, if you can get one.

The use of faceguards in polo is a matter for debate. They do protect your face, but can result in worse injuries from certain types of falls. Some people use protective sports glasses and a mouth shield instead. I'm afraid I don't really know what is best, but if it is important that you protect your nose then a polo helmet with guard would probably do the job as well as anything.

Thanks some good suggestions, that I didn’t know about. I think I might try the clear face shield as it’s multi purpose and similar to the current splint. I’ll run it past the surgeon when if back for review. Thanks.

Ice hockey helmets clear visor or cage, they must be strong it they will stop a 30mph puck. You can buy the visor or cage separately, looks like they may fit a riding hat, particularly a skull cap. Or you could buy a complete unit.

This.

I would say that if it was possible to design a full face riding helmet that didn’t result in neck injury then it would have been done by now.
Also they remind me of that horse botherer

Sorry I'm going off on a tangent here but didn't he end up getting really badly injured? I'd never wish that on anyone but it's hardly surprising.

It's perfectly possible and was done in the past under the Lucinda Green brand name, but riding people wouldn't buy them. Bike riders wear them for the more dangerous bike sports, and of course motor cyclists have had them for half a century.

They still had open faces though didn’t they? I’m thinking full face like a motorcycle helmet

OK but many BMX helmets are full face and motor cyclists have been using them for 50 years. My point about riders not being prepared to buy them still stands, They wouldn't even buy an open face one that covered the ears. I don't think it's got anything to do with not being able to produce one.

I think from a design point of view it probably does mean one that is effective, practical and comfortable would be hard to produce. Even in the review of the product above it’s mentioned how bulky it is.
You would ideally want something ventilated but also tight enough not to move, a good field of vision too.
I remember when chin cup straps were all the rage and then it was discovered that they threw the helmet back in certain accident scenarios which could cause serious injuries and they were swiftly phased out.

That was 30+ years ago. Current BMX helmets are no more bulky than a horse riding hat and much better ventilated. I wear the open face versions to ride in in summer. I've just bought a new bright red MIPS one.

As someone who plays ice hockey, both the visor and the cage are attached via screws into the helmets with the cage also being secured by two straps with fasteners round the back as they hold it into position, otherwise it would move up and down (riding trot could be entertaining ?) so I doubt they’d fit a riding helmet.

The plastic visors can shatter on impact and I imagine if you landed on your head, it would crack! Our goalie’s neck protector which is plastic based shattered into many pieces the other day after a slapshot ?
The cage would probably cause a serious neck injury, they’re very solid with no give, I would be worried it would cause the head and neck to hyperflex on impact.
