Just out of interest...XW AND HW horse is this possible?

Cant see why not. My friends mare has a decent wither, wouldnt say really high though and shes in a xxw saddle.
 
not sure - we have a 3.5 year old tb who has gone from a narrow fit leather saddle to a wide fit in a cob saddle in the last year - he has it fitted with a front riser has he still has the withers of a tb but is very flat backed like a cob so until he stops growing he has this combo and then we will revisit saddles again.
 
ahhh thats interesting thank you. So would you say this horse is high withered, or just a little high withered?

Agree totally.
I think some saddlers, not all of course think theres no way Im going to clear them withers with what Ive got in stock so stick a narrow saddle on and get a sale :(:(:(
 
Looks similar to my lad. I've copied and pasted this from a post I wrote last autumn on another forum:

Harley - general conformation and saddle rubs:


Thorowgood T4 - std wither
Thorowgood T4 - Cob
Thorowgood T4 - hi wither

There's a wide gullet in the first and the second saddle and an X-wide in the third.

The first saddle is the one that he was wearing when he got the rub, although he's been wearing it for nearly a year and I hadn't noticed any problems with it before I rode at Ffos Las the other week, but the white hair tell an ongoing problem I guess :(

I'm now riding him in a Wintec with a pro-lite riser to lift it off his withers, as the shorter tree points seem to fit better (the T4 Cob was just way too close to his withers). In the spring I'm going to get him properly fitted by a saddle fitter.
 
So mine is high withered then? Thank you for posting the pics. Its good to see how they fit differently. Yes that is an issue with saddlers, that or they cannot see the horse is high withered, so give you a XW saddle but a GP one and it tips back!!!

I'm after the Kent and master high withered one :)
 
I dunno, I think mine has a slightly higher wither than yours, but my horse then seems to have a flatter back than yours.

Yes I rode in a HW thorowgood saddle for a year or so (see the 3rd set of saddle pics) and it never marked him, but it's designed with deep panels to lift the saddle away from a prominent spine, so I always felt a bit perched on it, and also I felt that it was designed for "thin" high withers, rather than H's "chunky" high withers, so I felt the padding came in too close to the sides of his vertebrae.
 
ahh I see thank you. Yes thank you - I tried my friends HW W saddle on (kent and masters so equivilant to the thorowgood) and it fitted a beauty!
 
I wish I knew how to post pics so I can show you just what I have got to find a saddle for. She has the high wither of a WB and the very flat wide back of a cob, as well as very powerful shoulders, her weight is constantly changing so I have had a nightmare finding a saddle for her.
I have had five saddles for her in the six months I have had her!!! Lucky most of them have been a borrow, but she has not been 100% happy in any of them. So I am going to beg my husband for the money for a treeless, wish me luck !
So yes an xw high wither is very possible....just wish they made a saddle for them!
 
Have you looked at the thorowgood high wither? they have changeable gullet too. They are based on the same model as the kent and masters high wither which also have changeable gullet but are full leather.
 
Have put her in the HW kent and masters, was the best fit, and she went ok in it, but still not 100%. I have used solution saddles before and I loved them, think she will too, just wish they were a normal price, way to much for what they are. If he says no I will have to stick to this probably and just keep changing the gullet.

I had a horse arrive on my yard age 18 with terrible muscle wastage. I was supposed to school him and soon found out why! His saddle was way too narrow. He had really high withers with deep grooves either side where the saddle went. I refused to ride him in that saddle and put one of mine on him that fitted my 17.2 hh ID. His saddle had been fitted by a qualified master saddler. His owner got another qualified saddler in to fit a new saddle. On entering his stable he said 'What a narrow horse.' I was dismayed. I told him 'No, he's actually wide!' Saddler used a bendy ruler to trace his outline and fitted him with a wide tree but padded it to fit him in the short term with a plan to revisit in 2 months. We called him back within 6 weeks as the saddle had started pinching him. He took another outline and he had filled out an inch and a half on each side! He therefore removed more of the flocking and it continued like that for another couple of visits.
