I was just curious to know if people pick their horse's feet out before putting them to bed at night. My boys now come in at night & I pick their feet out each night & it suprises me how many people don't they just put their horse's straight in & don't pick their feet out... Sorry for the pointless post I am just curious :)

I do at new yard as field gate is a bit muddy & then walkway to stables is very stoney so he always ends up with feet full of them! Didn't at old yard though xx

We never do it, as we don't feel it is necessary (incidentally OH is a farrier).

(PS: This post reminds me how nice it is not to be at a livery yard any more - nobody going "Ooooo, look, X doesn't do that" and "Y hasn't done this" etc., etc.)

Same. My horse is shod with Natural Balance shoes and their website tells you not to pick feet out every day so I don't. I look at them to check for big stones and I'd pick them out if he was stuck in 24/7 as it would just be shavings in them then, but don't do it on a daily basis.

yes, but mare is barefoot. Don't want any nasty fungus creeping into the white line overnight....or any grit working in either.

:)

Where's the "like" button?

Mine is barefoot again and it drops out. Anyway, how many horses on 24/7 get theirs picked every evening?;)

My two geldings are on 24/7 (one shod all round, one only shod in front) and I pick theirs out every night (every now and then I don't but only if I'm really rushing or if the younger one is being a bit extra).

My mare is unshod and I don't pick hers out every night but I do before I ride as I have to bring her across a stoney bit to get her in to tack up.

I am not questioning what people do & don't do, I was just asking a simple question as I was curious. So I don't look at people & question what they have & haven't done. Why is it on this forum people always have to make some sort of comment

9 times out of 10 I do, must admit that sometimes I don't if I'm rushing about, but I try to get into a routine of giving him an evening brush or fuss time as I call it :D and picking his feet out, there's always a chance there's an awkward bugger stone stuck in somewhere which if in the wrong place could cause bruising or if there stood in damp conditions all the time (winter basically...pack in mud etc) then the feet really do benefit from a good clean out everyday otherwise they develop thrush etc.

Also if there kept in a field with a few other liveries and one has cast a shoe then there is also a chance your horse could be wearing an extra nail in his/her foot.

However I don't take any notice of whether other folk do, too busy trying to remember my own jobs *grins*

Because that is what forums are for - somebody writes something and other people give their own comments. Would be no point posting if nobody bothered commenting!

You gave your point of view and I gave mine - they happen to be different but that's the way of the world!

On a related note..

...a couple of years or so ago, Your Horse magazine published a letter from someone with a hairy cob-type who had gone out on a ride, thoguht horse felt a bit odd, got off to investigate and found a nail in the horses fetlock that was obscured by feather. Her point was that feathers were dangerous as you couldn't *see* injuries like that.

I wrote in (and my letter was printed) asking why this woman hadn't picked her horses feet out before she rode as in doing this she would have spotted the problem much sooner, rather than blaming the feathers.

It's so easy to just bring a horse in/out without really checking them thoroughly and picking out feet, to me, is a good opportunity to do a quick check of all 4 legs.

Not saying what's right and what's wrong but just something to think about.

if im in work no - i get someone else to bring her in (her tea,hay is in her stable)

If im not - then generally yes!

Some days i genuinly forget tho :o

I no a post is for people to give their opinions, but want I meant was it seemed like you was making me out to be someone who judges what other people do which I don't. I was just curious to know if people picked their horses feet out or not. :)

Strip off the intro and that looks very much like commenting and judging to me:D

I do, earth round here is clay-based and sticky, compacts down into the hoof really really quickly. Ponio is also prone to thrush. If we were on sandier, looser soil I might not be so religious about it :)

Yes, even if out 24/7 I would pick their feet out every day.
1. to check for stones!
2. to prevent thrush
3. And most importantly so they are used to having their feet handled everyday.

Well I appologise if it reads like I am judging people, but I can assure you I don't. I was just interested to no who does & doesn't. Yes people don't do it on my yard, but I don't stand there & watch what they are doing. So was just a genuine question. :)

I wasn't making you out to be anything, I think you did that yourself with your own quote:

Always pick out her hooves before and after I ride. Don't if I'm just bringing her in. Most of the the mud etc comes out on the walk from the field to the stables! And I can hear if theres a stone lodged in there!

Well again I will appologise if thats how it looked & re reading it yes it does make me look like I judge people, but I don't I just didn't type it correctly.

Yes - I do. He has had abscesses previously and his feet were in a bit of a state before coming to me so like to keep on top of it. He is also young and needs regular handling of feet to ensure he keeps on improving - as he is not the easiest horse to trim *whistles innocently*

However, he may go in and out his stable numerous times before having them picked out and sprayed if necessary, so no idea if other people think I do or not! :D

Not everyday, he has spavins so depends on how he's feeling. If he's having a stiffer day then normal I don't. But at least every other day.
