Thank you for putting this up Sal66. I've been following the story, some of the horses are beautiful, and some are just plain pitiful, it's a complete disgrace that any of them are being transported in such an inhumane way for meat.
I know gala, you would think on this day and age cruelty like this would not be allowed, and to be honest not put about enough, I know its horrible to see, but the more people are aware of it hopefully more wil be done.
I'm not sure where you would go to help these horses, but I'm sure there are people out there who could offer a home as a companion.
hi please everyone follow the link and read this it is truly awful what these horses have suffered i am one of the lucky few who as the pleasure of owning the big french normand cob jupiter he came over tuesday and has been a sweetheart a true gentle giant
here is the link for all the stories http://ihdg.proboards91.com/index.cgi?board=persfund
Parkviewsaddlery, Have you any pics to show us all, aslo aprt from buying one of these poor horses what else can we do, it truley puts alot of our problems into prospective, I'm not saying that the problems we all have are meaningless cos I know they are not , but at least the majority have healthy horses whi are not facing a horrid death.
i hope i have done this right sorry if it is to big
the ilph are running a campaign hoof not the hook campaign to stop the transport of live horses, we all know horsemeat is eaten it is the horrible way they are travelled which is the biggest concern and the treatment before slaughter
you don,t truly feel ashamed until you see this beautiful animals eyes and the sadness in them
I had a look at the site and couldnt understand why people in GB would want to import French horses to stop them from going to the butcher when GB is FULL of equines needing homed! Sorry, very long sentence. Let the French sort out their own affairs! Charity begins at HOME!!
I have nothing against the slaughter of equines but do have something against the long haul of live equines to foreign slaughterhouses. There are far too many equines in the world and sadly it is often better that they end up on the hook than have a life of hunger and suffering.
If you want to really help these horses get together with the ILPH or contact your local MP and begin the end of live transportation abroad.
Mairi.
Post it in the breeding forum - perhaps it might make some of them think again about bringing YET ANOTHER horse into this overcrowded world..... sorry, just my feelings
mairi we are stopping them being transported to italy we have stopped at least 20 of them suffering a horrible journey we are also lobbying mps, supporting the ilph and just about anyone who will listen i have also helped british horses but charity does not begin at home charity is for anyone or anything that is in need that is what defines charity for me
i don,t get it really lobbying mps would not of stopped these immeadiate horses ending up as salami
brighteyes totally agree re breeding
I'm not against them being slaughtered, I'm just against them being transported live for too many hours. They should either be killed on site then transported in a chilled lorry to the slaughterhouse, or have a journey of no more than 5 hours a day to the slaughterhouse.
Horse meat is very healthy, it is high in protein and fairly low in fat, so why not eat them?
Why are they all so expensive? About double what they are worth as meat. You don't think that by paying these inflated prices you are going to be creating a new market for these poor horses and encourage even more breeding and shipping.
pixie that is what the hook not hoof campaign is about we all know they eat horsemeat that is a fact like we eat beef or pork it is the live transport of these animals which is needed to stop
they are not expensive mine cost pittance you pay what the meat man gives
re breeding they will breed regardless of market it isn,t the way of thinking to breed for selling they breed because it is a waste of a mare not to
I am well aware of the fact that the majority of horses who end up as steaks travel to Italy. What I cant understand is the fact that people are buying FRENCH horses who have an average trip of 8 hours via road to Italy. Why dont you buy up the horses who leave Biellarussia, Latvia, Lithuania etc and have over 2000 miles to do in usually horrific conditions?
Can I ask you how much you paid for Jupiter and how much he weighs?
Mairi.
mairi you need to go and read up, alot of these are not french horses these have travelled from everywhere and are in france in dept 41 at a fattening farm so they have already endured a long journey before getting there and the french horses don,t have an average of 8 hours travel as they go round picking other horses up it can tak upto 3 days with no food or water
i think all cruelty to any animal needs readdressing, alot of people who are cruel and are prosecuted get very little in way of punishment and this needs looking at.Transporting horses in this way is wrong and needs stopping.
I'm sure there are people out there who could offer a home as a companion.

I doubt there are, and a great many horses pronounced unfit for work by a vet are sold as companions, then somehow manage to end up back for sale as riding horses. There is nothing wrong with putting a horse to sleep humanely and not taking the more cowardly option of passing it from pillar to post as a field ornament. What is unacceptable is transporting live horses abroad for slaughter because it is more financially rewarding to do so.
I realise that you and others are doing this due to your love of horses but I believe that you are being counterproductive.
For arguements sake lets say that I grow/deal potatoes. I am assured on the annual sale of 10 tonnes of potatoes and my customers have been coming to me for years. They only buy 10 tonnes as potatoes arent liked by everyone and are a niche product so it would be suicide for me to grow/deal much more .
One fine day someone comes along and wants to buy 3 tonnes of my potatoes and are willing to pay slightly more-it would be stupid not to sell when I have a friend who can sell me 3 tonnes of ps therefore making up the deficit.
I have just put some extra dosh in my pocket and that of my friend
. Those nice people from GB are happy and will send me more customers and my original customers will have their 10 tonnes anyway! What more could I ask for?
What you are doing is artificially stimulating the turn over and the more demand there is the more supply there will be
. Yes, you have saved 20 odd horses but another 20 will have taken their place immediately and who knows, maybe they werent destined for the meat wagon but had to fill an empty space by the one who got on the wagon for GB! Mairi.
PS; I couldnt help but notice that the majority of those on the rescue thing have been bred specifically for the meat trade-just like the Italian TPRs.
