Just saw this sad ad :(

I seriously love the 13.2 coloured she is also advertising.....But the mare and foal are divine....*wonders about how to go about asking the OH for them for my birthday next month* ;-)

If I thought there was even the remotest chance I could convince my mum I would... but it's a no go! Pleaaaaaase someone have them and cuddle them. The foal will be a beauty and Alice sounds as though she deserves a bit of peace!

sorry but how utterly ridiculous to have her getting in foal for a 3rd year in the row by the sounds of it, when she's had such a hard life. And blind but ideal as a broodmare???
totally ridiculous owners.

I would imagine that although overstocked, many rescue centres would take her in due to her blindness. Hope the owner has considered this.

If she is totally blind, whilst she might cope fine in a home she is familiar with I woudl imagine being rehomed would be very stressful for this poor mare. I'm afraid if I were her owners I would seriously consider putting her to sleep.

That's a bit unfair, the ad says they acquired her in foal with one at foot. They have had her three years and she has just had a foal - that's the only one they are responsible for her having had.

I do agree that being blind would not make her ideal as a broodmare.

I feel very sorry for her and am so tempted to go and get her. Poor old thing. I worry about her finding her way around in a new place, it would be so distressing for her but it seems like she's got to move and her foal needs her at the moment.:(

agree! she wouldnt know her surroundings!!

It says '...and was nearly blind' not that she is now totally blind, suggests to me she had some sort of eye problem, that is now ok...though maybe I'm just naive!

leaving a mare out with an uncut youngster (presume it wasn't a 4month old foal that did this!) is irresponsible-particularly since she had had two foals in quick succession from a bad home, should have been very wary of her getting in foal again (and to a much bigger horse by the looks of that foal!)

No, the ad states that she is now totally blind but manages to find her way to the stable if the gate is left open. I also feel the rehoming is not in this pony's best interests, much kinder to pts I think.

"although now totally blind manages amazingly, open the field gate in the evening and she finds her own way to her stable!!
She is very quite to brush, with blachsmith etc and was a cracking competition pony in her day!"

Sorry but the owners don't seem to be particularly bright! Letting her run with an ungelded colt just because they couldn't see his balls... really?!!Poor mare is probably better off having a nice summer then being pts. I hate the 'lets dump the blind mare on someone else' attitude. Grrrr take responsibility for this horse and do the kindest thing and yes I hope they see this post!

Have a look on the internet, there are blind horses showjumping, doing dressage and all sorts. Yes she would have to learn her new surroundings the same as a human moving would but she would manage and given a caring owner should be fine. Being blind is not a reason to pts, the horse is happy and with the right home could continue being so.

Well said!! Agree totally, how flippin' irresponsible, "accidently got in foal" poor pony, some rescue!!!

getting fed up with ads like this. Some I do hope its someone with a brain is going to get these two. Not only will they have a blind pony that needs special care learning her new surroindings but also a colt that will need gelding at some stage, extra expense. The amount of colts I keep seeing being got rid of, why do people not think before the breed. Rant over. Its very sad.

Absolutely. I also agree that it was totally irresponsible to leave her with a colt just because they couldn't feel his balls! Totally irresponsible.
As she is now totally blind, she would probably be better off pts and the foal found a nice new home.

Horses can't show jump blind! do be serious! I personally think keeping blind horses alive is cruel as its taking away part of their natural flight instinct. Just because they learn to "cope" dosen't make it right. A horse that is "coping" in this way is in fact quite badly shut down mentally, your forgetting a horse is a prey animal and in the wild a blind or partially sighted horse would be much more likely to attack and not likely to survive all that long, therefore although they don't show it (as any type of panic shown by a prey animal is instantly picked up upon by a predator) the horse is highly unlikely to actually be happy.

Well, I didn't mean to start a debate about the blindness factor but people are making some excellent points. I don't know what is best for the mare and foal but I hope they are able to find nice homes (or that the mare is PTS if needs be). I just can't bear to see adverts like this, they make me wish that I had acres and acres and acres and that I could have a little herd of rescued horses and ponies (I'm well aware that this daydream is somewhat ridiculous!).

btw the video of a 'blind horse' turns out to be still have some sight in one eye!! Doh.

Nevertheless being blind should not automatically mean having a horse pts!

I know of horses who have lost the sight in one eye who have carried on jumping but never a totally blind one. I have a dog who is gradually losing her sight, she is okay at home, finds her way around without a problem but gets really anxious out of her home environment. I am not saying being blind automatically means a horse should be pts, but in this case, I still maintain it is the best thing for the mare, hard as it is. Even if she is rehomed there is no guarantee it will be a home for life (it would seem the current owner thought they could offer one and that hasn't worked:() , ponies like this are a prime candidate to end up in the sale ring. Far better to know her end imho.

There are many totally blind horses and ponies living happy lives, some even hacking out.
They manage perfectly in the right home that is willing to have a leasure horse.
Most live with companions and the companions often act as their eyes.
We have domesticated horses so much that in the right home they are free from fear and live happy contented lives.
There other senses increase as in humans.
I do hope she fonds a companion home.

So stabling a horse for over 12 hours a day is natural is it then? Are all of us who keep our horses in at night totally irresponsible and they should be PTS because they "shut down mentally"? Pleasure horses all over the world are being kept in conditions that are so far from the norm but they all cope fine, hell is carrying a rider the norm?

I feel that just because the mare is blind is not a reason to PTS, she can adjust to a new home perfectly well IMO.

You have to sensible, who in their right mind will buy a blind mare, even if the foal is a good one, is her blindness passed to her foals, also it would have to be one to one for along time so she got use to her new home and you would not be able to put her in with other horses, incase they galloped about and she ran into a barbwire fence, the list is endless, maybe some will buy her and then in a couple of years time we will be having the same conversation:(:(:(
