A friend of mine was out for a job once about 5 miles away in a different village, and she saw a rather large cat staring at her down the tow path! it stood there for a while and then ran off through a hedge

I notice you are North Oxon, there have been many, many reports over the years I have grown up of large black cats, in the Banbury area, Chacombe and Wardington etc.

Well......I am glad I am reading this post in thr daylight...LOL:)

Could it have been a big bird?
A friend of mine was up on the moors getting his eventing mare fit one day.....when he heard the most amazing roaring sound....and something heavy landed on his head and started yanking at his crash hat.......a Red Kite was trying to steal his hat! These birds are HUGE!
He was absolutely terrified...all he could see were these giant wings..... were beating furiously as it tried to take off.....he was very lucky the talons didn't get his face.....and the bird eventually made off with his silk!
The horse didn't bat an eyelid and kept on walking through the whole incident!!!!

A lot of the horses around where I live are very reactive to the small cemetary at the side of the road. The gates are slightly set back but don't have any signs on or anything that would cause a horse to spook. Makes you wonder if they really can see things there that we can't....

My old yard used to be a place where all the pony club used to go back in the day, and rarely some of the liveries would see a man walking by the hedges! We all used to think he was checking all the horses..spooky

I spotted a weird light down the yard this morning... and as I was figuring out what it could be, a flare shot up from the trees and lit up the sky, followed by machine gun fire...

Fortunately, we just live next to an army training ground, not a war zone, but I tell you it's a shock and a half at 7am and you're still half asleep!!!

My mate lost her gelding a couple of years ago but everyone on the yard continues to see and hear him. For a long time none of us knew the others had seen/heard him too so each individually thought we were going crazy.

He was on the yard today. I was working with my youngster and i heard a horse moving around in the yard. I was alone no other horses in the yard but my youngster who was in his box. My youngster heard him too his head shot up ears pricked. I reassured him before letting myself out of the box and calling my mates gelding to see if he was still there.

An hr or so later when going up to the field I'm sure i saw him move from right to left in the tree line before going out of sight. I found it really spooky at first but now its kind of lovely to know/feel he still here still part of life on the yard.

I'm so creeped out now :p
I've never had any scary experiences at the farm thank goodness! I did used to keep my mare on a very old livery stables where the farm house had a date stone that said 1604 and the oldest stable block one from the same century. I used to go up at 6am before school to muck out and I was always the first person there - I used to make my parents wait in the car park with their headlights on until I had run round and turned every single light on the yard on. It was still spooky though, especially as a couple of stables had lofts above them (including mine!) and I always used to worry that there was someone or something up there! If I'd ever had any scary experiences I think I'd have had to move yards!
My current yard is also pretty old (1800s I think) and I do hate going in the hay barn in the dark in case something "gets" me :p

I used to livery my horses on an old farm....my block of stables was inside what used to be an old cow byre....

....quite often all 3 horses would turn their heads at the same time as though watching someone walking down the corridor...

I was always first on the yard....on a few occasions I would take the horses up to the field and see a horse already in there ....but as it was dark I wouldn't be able to work out which one it was....and think it odd cos there was no-one else around.....look away and look back and it would be gone:eek:

The yard was at the entrance to some woods- the farm track goes right up into the woods and some people have heard what sounds to be the noise of horses pulling a carriage- but theres nothing there. Spooky...

A few years ago my mum and her friends used to regularly ride every Saturday around a local bridleway when out of the blue the horses started spooking and not wanting to walk past one section. This went on for a few weeks until one day the bridleway was closed off as the police had found a dead body in - guess what - the same area the horses spooked at

These posts are great :0) thoroughly enjoying them! Odd how all these creepy things happen either 1st thing when light is just coming up or when light is fading. Not sure if to believe we, ourselves, go back to 'caveman' days and are instinctivley warry of thae dark incase we get eaten,...or if there is something more 'real' may be when we are more in touch with our instincts - like children see things more as do animals, both more in touch with their primal instincts. As we get older, we lose this, yet, circumstance, forces us to be more aware of our own senses. Interesting thoughts. Guess we will never know! I have had a few, from being on old airfields right through to the yard and walking the dogs.
One thing to remember - the dead cant hurt us, only the living can!

Many years ago I was going up to the yard in the evening and got really freaked out by some weird white lights in the night sky. They were very bright and moving around but not moving away so I knew they weren't aircraft. Ever since reading The Day of the Triffids I have been scared of strange lights in the sky so did my horse very quickly and then went into YO's house til it was safe to go home! I did feel a bit of a twit when I found out the next day they were just laser lights for a big party on a neighbouring farm.

I used to often ride past the Airman's Grave on Ashdown Forest and that was the only place my very sensible and non-spooky horse would have a snort and a shy, I always wondered what he could see or sense there.

This isn't horsey, but I haven't ever told anyone so feel the time is right to tell all on this thread :)

Before my ex was my ex we moved into a lovely old house with beams and a stable door etc it was georgeous although very small.
Ex worked shifts and the first night I was therebat night on my own. I heard someone run up the stairs just outside our bedroom door, thinking it was oh I went out to meet him and see what was wrong, opened door and no one there. This continued everynight till we split and I moved out. That wasn't the worse thing tho, I was sat in living room listening to music on stereo the remote was on table next to me and oh was in kitchen a certain song came on and stereo turned itself up really loud so I freak out and turn it down only for it to happen again. At this I run to oh tell him and he goes and turns the power to it off. He makes me a coffee and I sit at kitchen table with him he had shut the door to the living room and it had one of those latches you lift up to open door. We were talking about what was going on in the house and no joke the latch lifts and the door opens. I sh@t myself and started crying. I never spent another day or night alone in that house I have some very good friends who took it inturns when oh was at work and I was at home.
