Just seen Bossy's Bibs now do a mane cover - are they any good?

Was just on there to post a link for another user and saw this. I was only on there start of winter so they must be pretty new but has anyone bought one yet and can report back?

BH never has any mane left by the end of winter ( I am slowly replacing all my horrible neck rugs with standard necks but obviously they're expensive. I now hate neck rugs with a passion and wish I had never been swayed by them. Stupid idiot that I am) In the mean time though would love to look after his mane a bit. I know most anti rub things are rubbish but I have a lot of faith in Bossy's. They're vests are absolute miracle things.

Is it worth me shelling out?

I looked at them and decided against getting one.

The main (mane :p ) reasons were;

1, that my chestnut is very easily rubbed - I can't wear certain boots when riding her (my lovely Ariat ones that I saved for *sobs*) because the seams are too proud.

2, it wont stop the tightness caused by the neck cover when the horse grazes, which I am sure is the cause of the hair loss.

3, I don't clip her so I'm sure that she doesn't really need a neck cover anyway.

BH has rubs from my heels too :( You wouldn't think he would be the sensitive type would you :p

I don't need neck covers either. It just happens that I bought a couple of quite expensive heavy weights when I thought I did and I don't want to replace them until they fall to bits. It's nearly spring now anyway I guess. Perhaps I'll just hang on and buy a standard neck for him in the sales. He's back in his medium weight now anyway which doesn't have a neck so it isn't getting worse now at least.

I had been thinking hard about getting a mane cover because I am really fed up with my cob losing half his mane every year!
The lady who clips him put me off when she suggested that it could cause skin problems. My hiorses are out all day and it would have to stay on for long periods, which is where the problen lies. if you only have it on for short periods i think it might work better. She suggested mud would get under it and encourage bacteria and all that!
Hence my horses mane is the same as every year. Can i say he does have sensitive skin, which is another reason for ME not to have one. Could be worth a try if your is more hardy

Bless his cotton socks. :D

I also have a nearly new Shires Stormcheeta combo that sits in my tackroom unloved, but I can't bring myself to sell it. :(

I have found that Wug style rugs don't rub as they don't go tight when the horse lowers its head.

I have been told but never tried it that the only thing that works is sewing silk on the inside of the neck cover.

You could maybe get an old silk dress from the second hand shop and try it, I have very fine hair and complain it breaks where I tie it back and the hairdresser has always said use a silk scarf to tie it to stop breakage.

So I guess the person who told me to use silk on inside of neck cover could be right.

Lining your rug with silk isn't going to stop the pressure though.

I found that when my mare grazed in her combo - I couldn't even shove my hand under the rug towards her withers as it was too tight. When she lifted her head up - I could easily stick my hand under the neck cover.

My boy has a neck cover on turn out and stable, no probes with mane. But a couple of showing dudes I know will not use necks, only snuffy hoods type things and not in a field- there's a few bad stories on here regards to that. Can't comment on the BB that you're on about, but I do love my BB vest

I love my BB vests too :)

Will just go back to no neck rugs. Will have to bit the bullet and invest. I suppose at least no neck ones are a bit cheaper than full neck ones so will comfort myself with that!

I cut up a silk camisole and stitched it into the neck covers. A bit of her mane is sparse looking, i think that it is the fact that the air isn't getting to it and weakens it more than being rubbed. I would have her go without but she is getting a bit older and would rather she was cozy and dry than have a full mane. won't be saying that when the spring comes in and we are having to go out with a ****ty mane :(
