Bought my new horse a couple of months ago (and paid alot!!)
Our yard is quite open, and although she is a demon to everyone but me in the stable (so a thief would have no hope of snatching her)
Do you think that microchipping her would be best or freezemarking or both?
And which do you think is best to do on a timid horse

I do both

I have always had mine done on the shoulder, less chance of any discomfort with the saddle, quicker recovery time and always visible..a tip, if you use
freezemark

they usually use 3 digits as opposed to Farmkey who do 4 so it is one less iron. both will do individual marks for extra charge

Definately Freezemark. I have had all mine done, and my first was a grey pony. As long as it was kept clipped during winter it was perfectly easy to read. I'd also recommend Freezemark over farmkey

Did it show more of the dark skin?

Millie has black skin under her hair and I wondered if this would better.

She also doesn't seem to grow much coat at all, even in winter. Not sure how it will go this year with her living out 24/7.

When they Freezemark a grey they hold the irons on slightly longer so that, rather than the hair growing back white, it does not grow back at all. It has to be on the shoulder on grey,. not the wither, so if you need to clip the area it won't affect their keeping warm.

Patches is done Mooch. She's a pink skinned grey, but you can make her mark out. They just leave the irons on longer for a bald mark.

Actually, I've got to have Patches redone, as one of the irons can't have been on enough and the number 8 isn't as visible. You can see it on the pics below. Greys can only be done on the shoulder as a bald mark could cause the saddle to rub.

It's supposed to read as 8ELA, sort of like Bella which is the name I have been known by all my life.

I love that top pic of you two. It always makes me smile!

I had forgotten all about her having a freezemark! Doh!!

It does read as Bela!! Not something I have ever been called and I don't think Fish Face (got to love brothers!) or R Kid are great though!!

One of the girls I used to work with at BT was another Claire. When she got married she actually became Mrs Claire Bell!

I've had my youngster a year and still not got round to getting him freezemarked

, but do intend to. Think better than microchipping because of being visible. Planning to get him done in saddle area though.

NB not all horses do put up with the process very well - my other horse hated having it done, freaked out in the stable, pinned me & the Farmkey lady against the wall while the iron was on, despite polos/haynet/feed bucket.

Oh heck!!!! Fancy being called Claire Bell!

I found Clare-a-bell became Clare-a-bella-bambina with my dad which was then, Bella-Bambina .... before just being Bella as I got older.

I only started to think of myself as Clare when I moved away and married. Used to think of Bella as a childhood name. Whether it's because I don't like to admit I'm ageing, I'm not sure, but these days I quite like it!

Duncan calls me Bella.

Anyway.....I've waffled enough. I find the freezemarks stand out far less on a grey somehow. You do have to clip them in the winter though as the longer hair can obscure the mark. Not a problem for me with a shoulder mark as I clip in the winter anyway.

"Clare-a-bella-bambina " Pmsl!!

Mind you it is far better than fish face!!

Mill's will be living out 24/7, but I'm sure it will be ok just to clip the square if her hair gets too long.

Cat (IDxTB) & Mac my previous horse (WBxTB) were freezemarked on the same day. Mac was marked on his back & went nuts; Cat was marked on the shoulder as he was grey & even tho that's s'posed to be a more sensitive spot & the irons had to be left on longer to make the mark go bald, he didn't mind it after the first few seconds of the first iron.

Cat's mark, CAT7, was perfectly legible. Mac's first letter was a bit indistinct as he was being very difficult.
