I apologies that this is long winded but I want to warn others.

I put my pony out on loan last year while I was re schooling my new horse and it turned out to be the worst decision we ever made.

The girl (when i say girl she was 24) seemed pretty clued up and worked with horses so we were happy to put him there.

We visited on a few occasions and each time we hated what we saw. Mum came home the first time really upset as he has lacerations over his rump and bite marks all ove him from the filly he was sharing the feild with.
He had also lost some wieght in the first month of being there. We put this down to a new home etc.
We raised our concern that he was underweight and were assured he was being fed and wormed.
I also knew another girl(14) at the yard was riding him which was fine as she was trying to prove to her parents she could care for a pony.
I then had a nosey on facebook and found out that my pony had been sunloaned to this younger girl. he looked so miserable in her photos so i decided enough was enough and arraged to collect him after a heated conversation on the phone. The girl who I had orignally loand him to was on holiday at the time so there was a bit of argument with the yard owner when we showed up with the trailer.

When we got him home an unrugged him (his shoulders were rubbed raw!!) he had lost so much weight he looked like an advert for bluecross :'( I rcently noticed ridges on his hooves too which makes me worry he had laminitis.

I guess my point is whatever you do with your pony ensure you vet the loanee and where possible keep your pony at your current yard etc.

I totally regret putting my pony through months of hell.

Im just glad to say that he is home and very slowly getting back to normal - he has a spark in his eye again and looks for attention.

Rant over!!

Sorry to hear this and am glad that he is now back on the mend being back at home.

However, I too put my beloved gelding out on loan to a very well known equine college with certain stipulations to his care....after 6mths he was back home with me... he was not cared for in the slightest and I had to have vet, back lady out (who is top) and lots of feed, love and corrective care to get him back to health again....it made me cross.

I am quite disturbed the fact that people out there can treat someone else's animals with total disregard and also give the honest genuine caring people such a bad name along the way.

As with so many other posts I have heard about and come across the loanee's are being blacklisted for not looking after their loan horses.

I am finding it very difficult - along with others that are on here and are genuine loving and would do anything for a horse to find a loan horse all due to these stories.

There are some great loaners out there too...take up reference's and ask for regular pics and updates, I shall be sure to carry this out but if you would also see from my pics and on FB that my horses wanted for nothing ever! and I have said to possible loan horses owners for them to have a look...I have nothing to hide...

Such a shame that some people have to ruin it for everyone else...

Hope your pony continues to get back on his feet - so to speak I know how it feels I have been there!

What upset me was she could talk the talk and we fell for it. Looking back I realise she was useless. She would say one thing then come back with something else that contradicted the first thing.
Just so glad he is home and getting healthy and being treated like a king!! x

Theres a girl at my yard who has 4 horses on loan from different people, all except 1 of them are really ready for the knackers yard to be honest but she 'collects' them from unsuspecting people who believe all she spouts and they are left neglected in teh field. Over the snow she didn't come up once, all the other liveries managed to walk or find lifts in 4x4's and we rallied around to ensure all the horses were sorted, she left her's fending for themselves!! Of course we fed them..I used 5 bales of my own hay because I couldn't see them left, the YO said she wasn't putting haylage in because she didn't get paid to do so (nice YO!!).

I don't know why she takes on these horses, possibly so she can tell her gullible friends she has 5 horses (had 1 of her own that she rides once every 2 weeks but her family care for!!!). I wish the owners would step up and come and check on the poor animals, believe me if I knew any way of finding out who owned them I'd be letting them know what a state the poor creatures are in.

It makes me so angry. the girl - when questioned - said she couldn't afford to feed him (she to had lots of horses which i am sure is just a vanity thing) I just don't understand why she couldn't say and discuss it.
i had his mum out on loan once and she had been allowed to eat rag wort. when she turned yellow i paniced and asked the lady, her reply was "she's an old horse, she should no better"
I sometimes wonder if people should be tested before having horses :/

I had two bad experiences last year with loaning and have to say its really put me off. The first was a pony who became very unwell and there was disagreement between me (the owner) and the loaner and her vet as to what should be done. The second was a pony loaned out as she was between riders and she was returned to me abrubtly in November as the loaner had got pregnant (intentionally) . I felt if she was planning to get pregnant she shouldn't have taken our pony on; especially as I turned down a buyer in favour of the loan arrangement.

Loads of people can talk the talk!
