..tonight it did.

After Chico managed to scrape his leg on the trailer during trailer training (that's a whole other story) I was inspecting it when I noticed a huge sarcoid between his back legs. :(

It wasnt there a few weeks ago and it is big and angry looking. I'm devastated.

He has had sarcoids treated twice already and each time they come back, seemingly more aggressive. Last treatment was only about 7 months ago.

It is a crushing blow as to be perfectly honest I dont know what it means for his future now. I dont want to put him through treatment after treatment but they cant be left as they are growing so quickly.

Vet is booked to come out on Wednesday. Just dont know what to feel at the moment :(:(:(:(

Take your vet's advice obviously but you may not have to have him got through treatment, depending on what type of sarcoid it is. Our old TB has some really nasty, angry ones between his back legs - think there were 2 main one, pretty large and sort of hanging on. They were bleeding basically non-stop which was pretty horrid.
My dad suggested we try tie them off with garden ties! We asked the vet and he said to give it a try (we couldn't have really got elastic bands round them tight enough). So, we tried it. Within one week the first one stopped bleeding, dried up and dropped off and then the next week the 2nd one did the same. They haven't started to regrow (he does have some smaller ones still left but they are ok). The hair on his opposite leg has also grwon back as the sarcoids were rubbing it away.

He seemed a lot more comfortable once they'd gone and it's much better not to have to keep cleaning the blood off his legs.

That's rotten bad luck unfortunatly there's nothing sarcoids like better than a bit of stress to get them going again one of mine has had three lots of treatment for his .
How have they been treated in the past and where was it done?

He had about 15 treated first time with liverpool cream, between his back legs, under both front arm pits and along his stomach.
Then regrew aggressively under one armpit and two smaller ones on his sheath. They were treated with liverpool cream.

Both treatments went really well, vet was extremely pleased with how he responded.

But now this new one has appeared. :(

You just have to go at them again leaving them is not really an option .
Ask the vet if lasering is worth considering ( only certain types can be lasered )
Remember to keep a close check on his friends and cover any wounds they have reliously .

the issue is I dont want to keep putting him through the treatment if it is just going to re-appear in another 6 months. It's not fair on him and I also cant afford it.

The money is an issue I can see that but what esle can you do they are horrible things for a horse to suffer with in the summer and the treatment is not that awful for them .
The vet got me some really really good barrier cream ( you can get it on eBay as well I can't remember what's its called but I will look and post later if you would like me too ) It makes an excellent barrier for the flys we put on him and any wounds on his friends.

Could you freeze them off? My lad had his cryo sprayed and they dropped off within a week. Left white hair but that didn't bother me.

I am concerned that whatever treatment I go for there is a very high probability that they will return, even more aggressive in 6 months time. How many times can you put a horse through treatment before it's just not fair anymore.

No, I am by no means saying I'm not going to have them treated, what I am skirting around is the fact that in the interest of Chico's continued well being pts may be a consideration.

You need to talk to the vet it's awful bad luck I check my boy every couple of days and break out in a sweat every time I feel something luckily it's been dried on dirt so far since the last lot where done which was September my horse has been lasered as it was the gold standard treatment for the type he has.
But I have won with Liverpool cream in the past one horse had four lots of treatment with cream before we got them beat.
I just can't think of anything to say to make you feel better I was gutted when Fattys returned.

thanks for the support.
The earliest I could get vet is Wednesday so I am going to have a very serious discussion.
He is no longer covered on insurance, which is also a consideration unfortunately.

Sarcoids form from an acidic gut, treat them from the inside out and feed alkanize it makes the gut more alkaline.

Would like to see evidence of this if it's true? Do you have a link to any studies?

It is not the actual 'how they are treated' it is the fact they come back, again and again. Even if aciclovir cream worked, they would just come back. That's my dilemma. :(

Has your vet been in contact with the Prof at Liverpool? Might be able to advise long term prognosis.

Sorry you've had such bad luck :(

Yes, he was consulted on the last two treatments.

Also sorry anyone if I'm being a bit defensive, I am just so mixed up I dont know what to think and when i'm stressed I tend to get 'snappy' and abrupt. I really dont mean it. :o

Have you read up on here about Crest Toothpaste, several people seem to have had success with it and its cheap. I myself have never used it as very fortunately have not had the need to but am always interested to hear what results people have had with various things.

The toothpaste contains fluoride which is in the Liverpool cream alongside other things. Their may well be a less aggressive and expensive method to rid them. Maybe talk to Professor Knottenbelt himself?

My vet cut off a sarcoid, it had a very small root. Then he also recommended aciclovir cream -it's only a couple of quid from Amazon. Really sorry you're having the trouble you are, not sure what I'd do in your situation but don't feel bad for thinking of pts.

Your vet may have already suggested this but my TB had huge sarcoidosis in his armpit that were treated with Liverpool cream and came back more aggressive on two occasions. The cold sore cream theory follows the thought that the sarcoids come from a form of the herpes virus.

My vet suggested we inject BCG vaccine directly into the sarcoid. This took about 6 weeks (vet injecting once a week) and they shrunk to a little less than a pea size and were covered in fur. Then he had one on his face and same treatment it disappeared completely.

That was four years ago now and he has had no more and the others have not increased in size.

Good luck! They are horrible things x

Professor Dixon at Edinburgh looked after fatty ( my vet referred him up ) he said wants the difference between true love and sarcoids .... Sarcoids are forever
That nasty little virus is lurking in there waiting to have another go.
I looked into the toothpaste thing my OH who happens to know a bit about toothpaste said it would be the fluoride and you can get specialist toothpastes with very very high levels ( much more than crest) I tracked some down on eBay and have it in the tack room cupboard don't know if I would be brave enough to use it though.
I have also heard of people knocking them back with the cold sore cream as well.
It's a war of attrition with them .

This is well worth exploring PMP.

The good thing about the BCG vaccine was that it never made them angry and open like I found with the Liverpool cream ( not sure if this is case every time with LC but my experience) so was much more comfortable for him.

Could be worth trying the cold sore cream first to see if any effect and if so exploring further?
