I have been sat in my front room now since 4.30pm, it's now after 5pm. Just to put you in the icture - it is dark outside, we live on a narrow, windy, busy and dangerous road, one of the main routes into town.
During this time, not one, not two, not even three, but FOUR seperate horses and riders have gone past - ALL dressed in dark clothes, on dark horses, and not a single piece of hi viz insight!!

WHY? WHY?WHY?

Doesnt take much to shove a bit of high viz on before you go out.
I've been driving back from uni in the dark and there are loads of cyclists I've seen without any reflective gear too, they usually just have a small flashing light on the front, and one on the back sometimes

I often dont see them until I'm just about upon them with my headlights... seems mad, really

It is a shame that so may people show a total disregard for the safety of their horses and other road users by not wearing Hi-Viz.

I now wear long sleeved Hi-Viz rather than tabards so that road users can see my hand signals more clearly.

The way I see it is that my mare doesnt ask to be taken out riding on the road etc, its MY choice, and if something were to happen to her/me because somebody couldnt see us as a result of me not putting Hi Vis on us both, I would never forgive myself

We have spoken to them in the past, but they just laughed. They don't come from a yard, they are from a farm nearby, their own, no liveries etc.

I would give my right arm to ride after work at the moment because I am struggling like hell with my horse putting on weight with only being ridden at the weekends...but there is no way I would ride in the dark on roads even with high viz and lights on...no way!

I just can not comprehend why anyone would go out on a horse or bike without hi viz on - at any time of day. Do they have so little regard for their own and others lives?!

On our way to the yard tonight coming down an unlit, 60 mph very straight road where everything is doing 60 we passed two young men on bikes, both were dressed in black, no hi viz, no lights, no helmets - the only thing that let us see them were the reflectors on their pedals! Had it not been for OH in the passenger seat spotting the first one I think I may very well have hit him - he just did not register in my vision!

Grrrrrrr makes me mad!

That is such a stupid thing to do. I know of a horse locally that was hit & pts walking 2 minutes down the road from field to yard at dusk - neither horse nor handler were wearing anything brightly coloured let alone hi-viz. The driver just didn't see them until it was too late

Why????

in a word........STUPIDITY.

Me and my friend used to ride our horses round a local housing estate, which was well lit and no major busy roads. We always wore hi viz, lights, reflectors etc, the horses wore hi viz on their bridles, tail, legs and hi viz exercise sheets. That was 20years ago and there wasn't as much traffic then. I wouldn't even consider taking my horse out on the road in the dark now. Car drivers don't always see you in daylight, so what chance have they got in the dark. My horse means to much to me to put his life at risk.
