My friend rents a field from a local farmer for her horse. About 3 months ago, another horse came into the field (field split into 2 with electric fencing). The new horse is a 3yo just backed Welsh Section D. The owner of the horse (who is the farmers cousin's wife) has no idea at all about horses, and goes round telling everybody she has a black stallion . Friend has checked it is definately a gelding !

Anyway my friend went to her horse this afternoon to see the new welsh D wearing all it's tack, with it's legs stuck through the reins grazing in the field . Assuming the owner had fallen off (happens regularly!), she went over to free the horse, and find the owner. Nobody was around, but eventually she managed to get hold of the woman's husband. When my fried asked why the horse was turned out wearing tack the man's reply was that the woman his ridden the horse at lunch time, and was going to ride again after dinner, so to save time had left the horse tacked up :eek::eek:! I cannot get over the stupidity of some people.

This poor horse has not had it's feet seen to since they have had it, because they want to keep the horse sore on it's feet so it behaves whilst ridden :mad:. My friend told them this wasn't acceptable, and they said they didn;t know any farriers ! My friend had farrier out to her horse so arranged for the farrier to do this other horse at the same time, telling the owners what time they needed to bring it in etc, and how to prepare for the farrier (ie clean and pick out feet), but the owners didn't bother turning up, so the horse's feet weren't done .

Poor horse, welfare charities wouldn't be interested as it is in a field with grass in, and access to water, and condition wise does not look poor. But my friend (and myself, having seen the horse) feel so sorry for it. Friend doesn't want to get too involved as it is not her horse, but difficult to know what to do, when somebody is so ignorant, and refuses to take any advice ?

Try contacting RedWings, they were very helpful when a local novice owner obtained a stallion who kept getting out into other peoples fields  Within weeks of their visit the stallion was gelded and their management improved immensley :)

She left the tack on, because she was going to ride later??
Why did'nt i think of that!!
The woman needs educating, i would have to say something!

Believe me things have been said! The owner just doesn't want to know. It makes me so cross people like this are allowed to have horses!

Omg how does this woman even ride a Welsh section D? I accidently left hi viz wraps on one night, realised after he rolled and thought sod it I'm hacking in the morning but full tack that's uber lazy if that's her excuse. Tbh doubt she will keep the horse thru winter, novelty and mud don't go hand in hand.

I've not heard about people leaving their horses tacked up before, but I'm afraid very little surprises me in the world of horses, as the level of arrogance and ignorance I have come across in the few years I have been riding is staggering. The saddest thing is, it always seems to be the horse that suffers.

How bad are his feet now? If they are terrible then you have a justifiable reason for informing the welfare charities, even if the horse has food and water. A visit from an inspector might just buck her ideas up, even if she will not listen to other people.

Some poeple!! I've NEVER heard of someone leaving a horses tack on, how down right stupid, and it probably would have been the horses fault if any of it had been damaged.
It's so frustrating as some people won't take any advice, your friend must feel in a difficult situation but for the sake of the horse a little welfare visit might help if you explain everything that's happened!
Dimwits!!!

It's a shame people like this seem to manage to avoid buying a 'problem horse' because actually they are the ones that deserve to be injured for their arrogance, stupidity and downright pig-headed ignorance!!
Don't bother calling the RSPCA they are a useless organisation who won't poke their noses when they need to and do when they shouldn't!

Poor horse, welfare charities wouldn't be interested as it is in a field with grass in, and access to water, and condition wise does not look poor.

If the horse needs attention then the welfare organisations will be interested, regardless of the provision of grass and water.

Call the WHW.

Good luck.

i can understand your friend not wanting to get involved as if the stupid owner is family of the farmer then she could lose her grazing, but theres nothing to stop you contacting a welfare charity;)
And as for leaving the tack on, it's so amazingly stupid it's almost funny:eek:

If they are deliberately not getting his feet done to make him sore, surely a welfare organisation should be able to do something about that.
I mean leaving the tack on is lazy and stupid but making the horse be in pain is downright cruel
Kx

Reading this has made me so angry. How you haven't put owner's head in water trough and held it there I don't know. Poor horse.

I haven't actually seen the feet, so i'll go visit when the owner isn't around and have a look. I don't think the outcome would be good if I saw the owner!!! Glad to know welfare charities will look into cases like this, and if I feel it is necessary I will make the call.

heard it all now.....maybe i could leave my horses tack on during the winter...the saddle would double up as a rug!!!
Is it worth calling the BHS???

Putting her head in the water trough is by far too light a punishment!

I do not endorse violence or aggression, but when it comes to animals especially horses whom I love with a passion, I would shove and secure the bit in her mouth, rasp the bottoms of her feet and the tips of her fingers until red raw, so every time she took a step or tried to touch anything, she felt excruciating pain:D Strap the saddle to her back, tie her up in the field and leave her there all night!!!!!

See anyone non-horsey would think we're all a bunch of psychos (and to be fair, I probably am when it comes to my horses) and can't understand why we get so angry and upset over welfare problems and the sentences dished out. James Gray only served about 3 months for what he did to those horses at Spindles Farm when I would have put him away for life! Or at least kneecapped him, broke all his fingers, probably his back and left him bleeding.

OP - try your best not to kill those imbeciles and I like the idea of contacting a horsey charity to talk to them. Having an official person talk to them is far more likely to have an effect than you or your friend. Failing that you could just whack her round the head with a spade :p

Yeah I probably am a psycho...

I would've thought a charity or RSPCA or someone would care that they are deliberately causing their horse pain. What an idiot! Should injure them to make them behave

I know you've said they don't take advice but I would be inclined to say "are you aware that your horse can severely injure himself leaving tack on? what if he tripped over and broke his neck? or rolled and damaged his back...and the saddle!"

It annoys me that people cannot admit they don't know what they are doing

I dont avodcate stealing BUT if she leaves the tack on again - remove it!!! and HIDE it away. then at least she cant ride the poor thing with painful feet!!!

Ooooo Yessssssss I love this idea...Make it hard!!!!! :D

Id be doing all i could politely to help her then. If she isnt going to listen to being told then offer information, offer to be there for the farrier visit.

I know its not your direct responsibility but someone has to be there for the horse.

She needs a good slap! I have known people like her and its one to wind you up. I agreee call red wings. Another aguement to why people should perhaps have to have a licence to keep animals.
