Just when you think people can't get anymore stupid or ignorant...............

Even if they are stupid do they not have any common sense?

I would def contact the RSPCA, a visit might make them think but if she is not willing to learn then she should def not have a horse.
Did you say it was your friends tack she was using to ride? If i was her i wouldnt let the woman use my tack. Leaving tack on a horse turned loose could easily damage the saddle/bridle and if she does that imagine what other stupid things she could do to it, its so damn expensive to buy aswell.

I know a lot of riding schools leave there horses tacked up for pretty much the whole day if they are packed with lessons but this is done properly. Reins put up into the throat lash, stirrups up, relatively loose girth and left in the stable untill the next lesson. Nothing wrong with this but never seen horses turned out in tack

She needs a good slap! I have known people like her and its one to wind you up. I agreee call red wings. Another aguement to why people should perhaps have to have a licence to keep animals.

You are the only other person (apart from me) I have heard think this way. I agree anyone owning a horse should have some form of formal training, whilst I agree a licence is in somewhat a good idea, in order to obtain a licence, people wanting to own or loan a horse should sit an exam and periodical site checks should be made, I would willingly sit an exam and pay a fee for this, if I thought the monies would both be put to checking and saving a horse from pain or mental suffering as well as educating those wishing to keep a horse! In addition it might be another idea for all private yards to support a licence plate, beginning with red 'L' for learner and progressing to a 'Gold' plate indicating passed with flying colours. A little like Horse & Hound forum avatars Foal - Old Nag. Although I would not want 'old nag' on my gate post....

I'd have taken the tack off and when they finally noticed say it must have been nicked - as good a reason as any for not leaving it on the horse in the field. Then sell the tack and donate the proceeds to Redwings :)

As someone else has said though, Welsh Ds don't suffer fools gladly. It will soon have put the wind up her big style and will be sold, guaranteed.

I actually have no words

oh no found some.......whist I dont wish for anyone to be seriously hurt, lets just hope she has a bad enough fall to scare her and she sells him.

xx

I really thought i had seen and herd most of the things that can be done in stupidity with horses, but leaving the tack on in the field as she is gonna ride later is a new one on me.
I would try bhs or world horse welfare.
Maybe getting some of the leaflets from bhs and leave them on a gate with a small note that way is still annonomus

How bad are his feet now? If they are terrible then you have a justifiable reason for informing the welfare charities, even if the horse has food and water. A visit from an inspector might just buck her ideas up, even if she will not listen to other people.

As above. Perhaps she might take note of someone in authority, but then again....

I agree a little like doing a car theory test that sort of thing, or maybe all yards whether they are private or livery should recieve checks every year from a governing body to ensure that the horses are in good shape and health and i dont mean ' It has food and water but screwed up feet but its ok beacuse it can eat and drink' real checks like Pass port checks regarding jabs and good feet and condition with out being extream as I know some govering bodies can be very nitt picky.

Here Here! Lets campaign :D :D :D

No it isn't my friends tack they are using. They wouldn't be allowed in the same room as it, looking at the state their tack is in :(.

Completly agree you should require a licence to own a horse. To obtain the licence you should have to be able to prove you are competant, and also know the time and money involved in the unkeep.

Holy cow!!!! I am stunned at reading this wtf is wrong with some people? seriously allowing to have a poor horse suffer with it's feet so it behave's well actually it will do the complete flamin opposite what down right irresponsible idiots to do that!!!!
as for leaving the tack on........ well again wtf???? stunned glad the horse didn't actually hurt itself poor thing :( :(

I do hope that this woman doesn't keep him, and that somehow at least she can be educated to the welfare and wellbeing of such beautiful animals that she clearly does not deserve to keep.
If his feet are bad then that is a welfare case as they are allowing the horse to suffer :( :(
Pure evil

I am shocked to hear that someone would be so stupid to leave a horse tacked up in a field like that. What is it with people with horses and the lack of common sense? Is it a prerequisite that horse owners need to be devoid of it :( Sadly since I have been a member on this forum I have read more and more stories about horses being kept by total numpties. True we all make mistakes and none of us are perfect, but at least when people do have a brain they do learn from mistakes made.
To be honest I really don't think the people that the OP is referring to would learn from theirs at all.
I really hope that this pony gets sold on to a loving home and one that contains oodles of common sense.

With regard to the feet though I can only echo what other people have said on here that the welfare organisations will take an interest in horses that have feet that are in need of care, even if they have access to food and water. I speak through personal experience. My own gripe is that I hate to see any horse with feet that are not cared for. With a trim costing as little as around £15 a time there is no excuse not to have your horses feet taken care of.
OP if you can take a look at the feet please do and I also share the same view about the RSPCA, stick to WHW as they are much better at dealing with cases of neglect and abuse of equines.
Good luck and I hope the pony gets sorted very soon x

I'll sign a petition!! We should campaign to make everyone do a Care and Horsemanship course maybe something in between BHS Care Stage 1 and 2?

Not so in depth that you have to know all the bones and muscles but the care of a horse and common ailments etc should be mandatory! xxx

Personally I'd be against a license for owning a horse.

The people that bother to get a license would be the likes of responsible owners who would probably already look after their horses properly anyway.

The types who don't care or wouldn't bother will continue regardless and then the cost of policing those who don't have a license will take away from the funds that could be used to rescue those horses in need. Simply knowing about basic care is often not enough when owning, there are always situations when you need more than basic knowledge, although I agree that every responsible owner should have the basics, that is an individual responsibility.

Educated owners are still capable of neglect, a license won't stop cruelty.

I work hard to pay for my horse, I'd begrudge paying extra so that a Tom Dick or Harry says I'm competent enough to care for one.

There will always be numpty owners, that is why the rescue agencies are there, to support and hopefully educate them. Better off supporting those agencies than paying for licensing imho.

Call Redwings and they will send a lovely local welfare person who can 'advise' the new owners and the farm owner of their Obligations within the Welfare Act 2006.

You are describing neglect and ignorance! The welfare act clears states that horses should be turned out in a place where they can be 'free to be horses'

Email them and outline everything that has happened giving obviously where they are etc and your details (although they won't divulge your details)

Good luck sounds like a nightmare

Its probably not a bad idea to take pictures which are dated and time stamped. If you see the horse tacked up, then I would remove the tack - point out that not only is it uncomfortable for the horse but it is very very likely to be damaged when being rolled on or scraped, although I would have a nasty feeling that the tack does not fit anyway.

All you can do is to keep nagging gently. While this gets all of us hot under the collar, we are speaking as individuals who do know better and maybe you might get more traction if you look at how the horse is kept and try to look at it from a complete beginners viewpoint. I am not excusing this owner, just trying to find a way you can get some better results as you are trying to help. Perhaps you can suggest she joins the local riding club, maybe get her to log on here as a member, be assumptive - "if you leave me your cheque, then this time round I can be here for the farrier with your horse and then maybe you can do the same for me next time?" I know you would not do that but do you see where I am going with this? if you are seen to "attack" people then it gets you nowhere.

Please - do not - under ANY circumstance read this in ANY way a criticism of you. It is 100% not. It is me simply trying to see if there is another way you can reach this owner.
