Hi all
Had my world turned upside down today and I'm totally at a loss as to what to do, so any thoughts would be appreciated.
I have a CBxTB mare 12 yrs old and bored stupid with us, she desrves more than being a happy hack, so cos she isn't worked enough she sometimes gets naughty, not nasty just naughty, she knows her own mind.
So I had arranged to loan her out to my daughter who is in the army and it was all arranged for her to go to Southampton early Feb, now my daughter is
talking about leaving the army to become a trainee vet nurse, job offered up in the north east.
My problem is she won't be able to afford to keep my mare on her new wages,
I already have the mare's replacement and can't afford to keep them both, so one has to go. Do I keep the new horse who is more suited to what I need, or my mare who I love dearly but is too much for what I want to do, because of the mare's nature, I don't want to sell her because I would lose control over how she is treated, show her a whip and she reacts with violence, I have spent two years proving she can trust people, but she does push her luck, especially when she's in season, she can jump 5ft for fun and is wasted on me, when i got her she was undernourished and beaten into submission, now she can be best described as a character.
Oh god, decisions decisions.

Perhaps someone may be interested in taking her on loan, to stay at the current yard so you can keep an eye on her?
Is it only short term that your daughter will not afford to keep her? If so, perhaps look for a cheaper yard/field for a year or so where you could keep them both...

That's not an option unfortunately, we rent a cottage on a very small yard, max of six horses, we now have three horses and can only afford two long term, so one has to go. My problem is I know any new owner of the mare who tried to use force would live to regret it and the mare would likely be passed from home to home, each time her behaviour would get worse.
For her sake I should keep her, but I am mid 50's and arthritic so can't ride every day and she gets bored, she rolled my OH along the stable wall and broke his ribs after being in for four days during the bad weather, she was so keen to get out and normally she has lovely manners.
I am really having problems listening to my heart and my head on this one, she is a lovely girl when conditions are right
