Just where do you find them?

I know, I know, it's the age-old question, but where on earth do you find horses to loan?

I'm in West Sussex and am looking for my first horse (first time owner, long time looker-afterer for other people!). I want something 15.2 - 16.1 ish, safe and sane as I'm a little bit nervous, well built and able to do local shows maybe some intros, but where do you look?

I'm aware of horsemart and world of horses etc, and will look in local tack shops. It seems to be more word of mouth, and as I've not been in this area very long I'm not really in the 'horsey set' yet..

Any advice?
 
Why don't you try offering 'looking after' services on a big DIY yard or riding school as most people loan decent horses to people they already know in my experience. I know load sof people who've loaned after they got to know someone.
 
Have you put an ad up yourself asking for one

I have just been searching through loads of sites for a similar type of loan horse for a friend (also in south east), and found almost nothing suitable! Highly frustrating, I would definately put a wanted ad up if I were you. Could also look on local pony club site/ask DC, also ask farrier, local riding schools etc.
 
yep it took me ages and day in day out on the internet on every site going !!
found 1 and he had to go back as it was so totaly unsuitable
but the loan horse i have now was by word of mouth now he was not what i was looking for at all
i wanted 15.15.3 !! and ive got 16.1 huge big boy !! 1st pic on sig !!
so widen your search as my boy is fab so far,you mite be supprised !!

Unfortunately a lot of the time I find it just happens to be who you know, friend of a friend etc.

I wasn't actually looking to loan (the thought had crossed my mind but I hadn't got round to acting on it as I had heard so many bad stories I was worried about riding someone else's horse!) - but he found me !! My friend brought her first horse and I visited often to help her out - and got chatting to a lady who had no rider for her old chap and just said try him out if you like. So I did and 18 months later we are inseperable, and that 'lady' is now a very good friend!!

I seem to have been really lucky when it comes to horses. My boys both started as loan horses, and I just seem to be in the right place in the right time.

However, had to ride a lot of nightmares to find them!

How about you? See you're heading into the world of loaning/owning - had enough of the cost of lessons etc?
