Does any get competive when your doing showjumping or cross country? I am still hoping to do showjumping but I just got wondering here do you go out competing during August or September and have a rest during December or do you go out before the Christmas period starts? At one riding school they did a Easter sj event and I enjoyed both events they did oh I have never felt competive but I do say well done to the other person for either dressage or showjumping

When I first started jumping I was extremely nervous (terrified, basically) and it would never have occurred to me to be competitive. My aim was basic survival, not winning. But as I got more confident I started wanting to jump clear. And then I wanted to be placed. I do love the feeling of pulling out a really good performance and taking home a frilly!

Then I started eventing and for the first 2 or 3 I was also just trying to get round but now I am very competitive and want to improve my scores and get placed. (Still waiting....)

But I still say well done to others. It would be a shame if I became so competitive that I stopped supporting my fellow competitors.

I event from April to October then switch to show jumping and dressage for the winter though I do far less competing in winter because I am really just training for the next eventing season. I don't have a rest season - but they will often go several weeks between competitions throughout the year to have a mental and physical break from it.

My default setting is competitive, but I've learnt to stamp on that as I'm a complete beginner to driving trials so no chance of me winning and its really important that I dont push my lovely young pony too hard chasing times. I woudnt compete if I didnt want to win though.

For us this year has been very quiet, but the plan now is to do a couple of big outdoor events, then move to indoor competitions over the winter. I want to try and qualify her for the novice pony class at the championships in April next year and to do that I'll need to be competing once a month from October until the end of March. The christmas show is the best one! Everyone dresses up and the atmosphere is brilliant.

Being competitive doesnt mean I dont want other people to do well. I was thrilled last year that I was placed second in one and even more thrilled that my friend was first as she had worked so hard for it and deserved the win. Being competitive doesnt mean you dont want other people to do well and cant be pleased for them. It just means you have the drive to do well yourself.

I'm not normally competitive in any way and nervous with knobs on. But the few times I have found myself in a ring I've suddenly really wanted to win, chose the big ones in pick your own fence etc. Wish I knew how that works!

I'm ridiculously competitive, but usually in quite a self-destructive way. I do keep my ego in check for the sake of my horses though ;)

Yes I’m very competitive. I showjumped a lot as a kid and a teen and did very well with my JA pony. I was extremely lucky to get myself one of the top jumping ponies in the country. She had been a successful Wembley pony in the speed classes, so I was already sat on a winner, which helped!
Everyone on the circuit at the time knew each other and we made some really good friends. It was a friendly rivalry, we all wanted to win, but we would always celebrate each other’s success with a slap on the back and an ‘I’ll get you next time’ for good measure! They were good days.

I’m still competitive in dressage, but not like I was jumping.

I'm completely non - competitive with others and not worried about winning at all, but VERY hard on myself if I feel I've let my horse down / not prepared well enough / made bad decisions / ridden like an eejit
Not sure how that fits in??!!
