After sudden and pronounced issues under saddle and some comprehensive investigations, turns out the Grey Donkey has kissing spine severe enough to not be fixable. He's field sound, he's happy in himself and I owe him nothing . . . so, with a heavy heart, I am retiring him - not just from competitions but from all ridden work. In the next couple of weeks he will move from our trainer's yard to a little place just up the road from me, I will do some limited in-hand work with him just to try and support his body/keep him strong, but he will never be ridden again.

He owes me nothing - I owe him everything (he pulled me out of the deepest, darkest depression), and I love him more than I can begin to articulate. His other issues (navicular in both fronts, arthritis, etc.) leave me worried that he won't tolerate retirement well, but we'll give him the summer and go from there. I will be keeping a close eye on his body condition and his all-round soundness, and if I think he's struggling, I won't see him suffer.

So . . . the upright little Polish reject who struggled to trot without looking like a wind-up toy ended his competitive career by scoring 77.31% in his last ever competition - and then went on to jump the moon in the school a few days later. I am so proud of him. Well done my beautiful Silver Boy - and thank you - enjoy your retirement - you deserve it. I promise that I will make sure I keep you as comfortable as I can until you tell me you have had enough - and then I'll do the right thing, even though I can't imagine my life without you and my heart will shatter into a million pieces.

I feel a fraud posting this - because he's still here, I still get to see his cheeky face every day - but I'm still very sad . . . I thought he had years of ridden life left in him - especially after we brought him back from that suspensory injury . . . but he is very broken now and there's no coming back from this.

Still . . . he IS still here . . . so I'm off to learn everything I can about how to keep a horse strong using just in-hand work :).

Aw bless you... you have done so well with him to keep him on the road. It is sad, especially when you put so much into a horse. I hope he enjoys his retirement and in hand work and I hope you find another horse at some point to be involved with that gives you happiness :).

Oh no that's such sad news, but I hope he has a happy retirement and you get to enjoy him still, just in a different way.

Thank you. Hopefully I can keep him happy and comfortable for a very long time - I would love to see him get old (as long as he's comfy) . . . I can't think about replacing him right now - my heart won't countenance it and my wallet won't allow it - but I have learned never to say never. For now, though, it's all about giving Pops the best possible retirement.

I always enjoy him - he won't be ignored and he's so quirky and full of personality that he's fun to have around . . . I just want to make sure he's comfortable - I can't bear to think of him hurting.

That actually made me tear up!

So obvious how much you love & respect him ! :)
Having been there you think you don't know how you are going to cope not riding & competing them, i thought i would start to loose the bond between us but honestly it didn't change at all i loved her with all my heart till the moment we decided she wasn't happy any longer :(

I'm sorry to hear that but he is in very safe hands, its lovely how much you dote on him. He is very lucky to have you

Such a bitter sweet post - so sad about Kali, but SO nice to hear of someone who loves and respects their horse so much.

WRT in-hand work, a look at Jean Luc Cornille and the Science of Motion may be interesting to you? He has a webpage with interesting articles, some videos on YouTube, and some Facebook stuff. I usually need to read everything he writes at least twice though!

Wishing him a sound, happy and long retirement. Hope he enjoys eating lots of grass and just being a horse :) That dressage score was indeed a nice high to end on :) x

Ahhh...so sorry but he really landed on his feet when he found you. You have done so much for him and I have enjoyed and empathised with your journey from the beginning. I hope he enjoys his retirement and you enjoy just being with him. All the best...:)

So very sad to read this PS, but I wish your lovely boy a very long and happy retirement with you x

Thank you - I'm sad too - but need to look at it as a new chapter and am determined to keep him comfy and happy in the field for as long as possible.

Awww - thank you. I love the bones of him . . . he's just such a funny little character. And I hope I recognize that moment the split second it occurs - couldn't bear to think of him suffering needlessly.

Oh thank you for that - will definitely go and have a look - I feel as though I need to get creative. Much appreciated.

Happy and sad for you - wishing Kali the best retirement :)

Thank you - I'm wishing it for to be LONG and happy - but if he isn't happy or he is uncomfortable enough that he can't do what he needs to do to be him (if that makes sense), then I'll be making that very difficult decision.

Thank you - yes, very proud of the little monkey. That was his best score by a country mile. Now I want to see him have a good few years just being a proper Donkey ;).

Thank you . . . but how could I have done anything less? He's my superstar and I love him to bits. :).

I have followed K's progress all through the last rehab and the very dark days of that. I am very happy you are upbeat about this and TBH I think you should be. I do believe he may well remain happy and sound and have a long and happy retirement. Also agree that the in-hand work should help him remain comfortable. It is extremely undervalued IMO. Think about how much less you will have to bath him! Happy retirement K! May it be long and happy xxx :)

Thank you - I wouldn't say I was upbeat - just pragmatic . . . and hopeful. Poor sod will still get bathed in the summer (he won't be living out, but he will be having tons of turnout), but hopefully he will settle into his new herd of naughty boys. Fingers, toes and everything bendy crossed that he stays sound enough to retire for a very long time.
