Kate (Greyhound)

OK in view of the resounding silence from the letting agents and my landlady this is not looking good - on to option 2 I feel!

ellieB would you like a second hound? :) I am pretty confident she wouldn't have any separation anxiety issues bearing in mind the lifestyle she has had so far.....

Aw what a shame! But thank you for trying!

Argh, I think I'm going to have to be sensible and use my head not my heart :( I work long hours (leave at 8am, back at 6pm) and I'm lucky enough to live near my mum, who very very kindly pops in to see Joe every lunch time and spends an hour or so with him or takes him for a walk, and I just don't think I could ask her to deal with walking two - especially since Joe has such a prey drive, he can be hard to handle when he goes off on one - and if Kate did the same it would be a bit much! If I was totally independent I would say YES in a millisecond, but I just don't think I can ask it of my mum. Not unless Kate is a proper lazy bones and would be fine to be left most of the day! Sorry Kimberleigh :(

No need to apologise! Thank you for even considering it!

Kate does have a high prey drive and although she doesnt go mad or kick off etc, I would agree with you that it wouldn't be fair to ask your mum to be walking 2. Kate is brilliant indoors and doesn't suffer at all from any separation anxiety, but being alone for such a large part of the day probably wouldn't be ideal for her either. Keeping my fingers crossed someone suitable comes along - have decided she could be squeezed in with the other 2 greyhound girls, and if they pick on her then can always muzzle them for time being!

That sounds positive Kimberleigh ;) I do hope she settles with them - let me know if there are any problems, I’m sure I can find loads of contacts over here for possible homes :)

It will only be a temporary solution but means I dont have to make a pts decision too soon!! She is still very much in need of a new home so if you do hear of anyone looking that would be great 😀

We are Greyhound Trust South Lakes and will take Kate and find her a forever home. We don't have kennels and all the greyhounds who come here live in our home. We will need to know where she is so we can arrange transport and if anyone can help us with the transport costs that would be wonderful. We've been taking in greyhounds since July 2004 and found homes for over 500.

This is a link to the donation page of Greyhound Trust - I’ve asked to join the South Lakes FB group so I can explain to them where donations are coming from :)

Hi GTSL, Im guessing my original PM didnt get to you?

I spoke to the person she came from just after I saw your offer to rehome her, and he said he wasnt willing for her to go to rescue, so his friend will take her instead. Not my ideal ending but had to run it past him given he still has her paperwork, and if he has another place for her then thats ultimately hos decision.

I hope nobody has sent money to help with her transport yet, as I've only just logged in and realised my PM must not have been received by you given the posts since.

Thank you so very much everyone for your offers to help with her though - you're all very kind hearted!

Our 'rescue' doesn't have kennels. All ours live in the house and we currently have 9 cuddled up in front of the fire or on settees. Just hope Kate is okay after all that was said during this thread.

I doubt it personally, having known of quite a few rescued from Ireland :( This makes me SO cross (and this is a personal feeling, no reflection on GTSL in any way) - these are hounds not money-making commodities :(

Kimberleigh could just have said she was going to Lev, and arranged it to be so. Poor Kate, she will have endless litters until her uterus collapses and then be shot, no doubt. Still, at least she will have made plenty of money for her connections.
I am disgusted and actually quite upset.

I feel the same Clodagh and expect the same “lifestyle” for poor Kate - I knew I should have just taken her and sorted it out later :( That poor dog :( :(

Clodagh, you have summed up it up exactly. It is an appalling state of affairs.

Many of us on this forum take on rescue dogs not create them and I am sure this thread will upset a lot of folk - it has certainly upset and disgusted me.

You say Kate that "Sadly that is the life of 99.9% of greyhound bitches in Ireland - not nice but it is a sad fact"

Just because it is commonplace does not make it acceptable and I would take no pride in being a part of that in any way.

Could we have just lied about it Kimberleigh? Say that she was going to a home with someone in the north of england, and we club together for the transporter cost and then the lady from the rescue could have taken her from the transporter guy? Or would her owner have wanted to know full details etc?

Correction. This should read "You say Kimberleigh that "Sadly that is the life of 99.9% of greyhound bitches in Ireland - not nice but it is a sad fact"

Kimberleigh is the breeder, I believe - though correct me if I am wrong.

Kate is the poor dog.

Can you not just do that? Say you want her to have a sofa and a home life and despite what you said earlier you really do want her. it's worth a try.

Hi all, sorry have only just logged back in.

Kate is fine, I had her speyed myself so no worries about her being bred from again. She wasnt my dog to tell any lies about until her paperwork was with me, which it wasn't. Her owner is actually a genuine bloke who has sent her to live with a friend of his...indoors, as a pet... I wasnt willing to deceive him and have her end up on a rescues website being advertised as it would reflect poorly on my integrity had it got back to him.

The right homes still haven't came along for 2 of her litter and unlike many in the greyhound industry I am not willing to let them go to just anyone, so they're still here!

Yes thousands of these animals get put down when they're no longer of use to their owners, but Kate will not be one of those. Despite the litter never having been mine in the true sense of the word, as I just whelped them for the owner, I have given my word that if they dont make the grade then I will do my utmost to rehome them as pets.

I do resent the insinuations made in some comments, because I have dogs here that nobody else wants and would just put down, but I'm the idiot who cleans up after them and goes without to feed them! So any suggestion that I would let Kate, or any dog in a similar position down, does piss me off!

Ive actually just taken in an 18month old male greyhound, who was due to be shot for being "1 length too slow to win a trial stake". This assessment of him would've been based on a single run up the gallops having never been out of the paddocks prior to that, so zero fitness. Took him to a physio I know as could tell he wasnt right and turns out he has an old injury to a toe, what appears to be a hole in his shoulder muscle from (best guess) a bite as a young pup, along with 3 other old muscle niggles. So another month with some tlc and he would have been right as rain...but that time wasn't offered to him; hence why he's with me

Think I've justified myself more than enough now, which I know I dont need to do, but reading the comments got my back up
