Kauto is pulled up!

Was pretty sure his owner said he'd race again. I do hope I heard him wrong. Would love to see Kauto retired safe and sound to the field

From the guardian website:

I think we probably will retire him. We said we wouldn't say anything today but I think it's a very good bet we'll do that.

"What a great career he's had and he's been a wonderful horse. I've been so proud to own him and also the support of everybody has been absolutely tremendous.

"I would say it's 90% certain that he'll be retired. Someone will have to come up with a very good reason for me not to retire him."

I noticed KS was wearing a tongue tie today - don't think I've seen him wearing one before. 100% the right decision to pull him up. I think they should probably call it a day, the horse owes nobody anything and has had a great season and career. He will be 13 next year as well!!

Well done Ruby for keeping King Kauto safe, and well done AP for the win on Syncronised.
I will admit to feeling a tad emotional when Ruby pulled up, I feel a bit like we all own a bit of The Star :o

Not necessarily they planned to never make an announcement on retirement regardless of how he ran. Quite sensible too...why detract from todays winners with Kauto's retirement. They know the horse, thay have done right by him all along no reason to doubt that they won't continue to do so
Agree with you completely, they said they would not make annoucement today, "dammed if they do dammed if they don't". Please could all the people on this thread who are saying should not have raced etc.....just be grateful for a wonderful jockey, who did the right thing by the horse, and how well and carefully he pulled him up. Kauto got his chance and he has come back safe and well, the race was won by another good horse and a great jockey, no horse was injured, come on lets give National Hunt racing a great big cheer........

He's worn a tongue strap on and off for ages but definitely on his last three runs before today

He jumped the first few fences really well, but just stopped travelling. I hope he is retired too, and we have happy memories of the King George on Boxing Day.

Good result of the Gold Cup though, an exciting race. Well done AP and Jonjo - not quite as exciting as Dawn Run, but that was an epic.

I was relieved when he was pulled up quite frankly - I was sitting behind a cushion dreading him coming down or worse...

My other choice was Synchronised and well done on him and AP - as usual hadn't made the effort to put any money on him, but pleased I picked well!

I think its pretty safe to say that the next time Kauto will be seen on the racetrack it will be to parade, not to race. The owner, trainer et al will make the right choice and they made it a long time ago by agreeing that nothing will be said today no matter what happens.

Give them a week or two, let the hub bub die down then announce. Don't detract from a fantastic winner and a fantastic weeks racing. We have a couple of quiet Saturdays coming up before he National, I can see it being on one of them.

So glad he was pulled up & here is hoping that he will be turned away for the rest of his days enjoying the quieter life!

I have to say having had a cheeky £1 bet on The Giant Bolster for a laugh I was totally gripped to the race, what a brave performance from him, I think I have lost my voice for all the cheering lol :o

So glad he came back safe- well done on Ruby Walsh for pulling him up.

Can seem them trying for a 6th King George but I hope I am wrong. Just PN said he'd never run at Cheltenham again suggests he may run elsewhere

Its not like he has to be retired to a field there are so many things he could do to have an active retirement- look at Denman for example.

He has so much presence think he would excell at something where he could "show off" such as eventing. And of course parading at races :)

Ruby was a legend to pull him up. Clive Smith was decent to not say anything about retirement and detract from AP and Synchronised's great win. It's been a great festival and I am sure racegoers would have been pleased to see him. I look forward to him parading at a course near me!

I was so placed to see Ruby call it a day as soon as KS showed any sign of not loving the race. I had a bad feeling about the race and to see him bouncing back with his ears pricked was the best sight. I hope he enjoys a long and happy retirement!

I agree that Ruby did the right thing by pulling him up. He is quoted on the Racing Post website as saying he was thinking about pulling up when AP suggested to him that he should pull up. In the interviews I got the impression that Clive Smith would be keen to retire him while Nicholls was erring towards getting him in after a rest and seeing how he was. Their comments about the water jump don't add up as it is a small fence and the water is only about 6 ft wide. He didn't stand off so there would be less stretch than over a normal fence. Ruby's father seemed very negative before the race too so it is just a relief that the horse is ok.

I was wondering that as well- also if he had "tweaked" something you'd think he would have dropped away more quickly straigght after the water but he jumped the next few ok.
