kauto star

well i would fancy him to add another gold cup TBH, this is the best horse i have seen for a great many years. far better than dessie, wayward lad and several others that have been mentioned on channel four this afternoon. marvelous creature.

I'm so pleased for him, what a little star. I agree with you Lucretia - Kauto for the gold cup. He jumped wonderfully and is clearly back to his best - I think Voy is great and Kauto walked all over him. Denman's had problems, and for a big powerhouse like him only having one run before the gold cup cant be ideal.

Lets hope we're back here this time next year congratulating Kauto on his 4th King George.

I love him, and am so glad to see him put the doubters back in their boxes. Interestingly, it seems to be those that don't really understand how horses function that think he's not what he was. I hope their fingers are burning!
As far as the Gold Cup goes, I'm still firmly in his camp because I don't think he ran to within a stone of his form last year. He definitely needs gaps in his races. And Denman has to come back......... there's nothing else about at the moment to trouble either of them, I think at their best they both have the beating of War of Atttrition.

What about Harchibald too tho'.........

Superb performance, and I can't believe the carnage in behind, Punjabi was so lucky to get up from that fall..........

Great day's racing, I love this time of year, bring on the Lexus Chase!!!

you can slap me as much as you like but dessie never won races with the ease of this horse, you would have to go back to captain christy or bula for that.

Yes he did, but I'm not enough of an anorak to remember which ones!

One thing Dessie did have was a tremendous will to win, and he was the most electrifying horse to watch.
I don't want to compare them, I don't think you can. If you do that one of them loses, and neither Dessie nor Kauto deserve to have holes picked in them.
We're just really lucky right now to be able to see a genius like PN keep serious horses at the top of their game the way Elsie used to.
Jonjo could do with learning a few pointers from him........

i am afraid i think dessie got more credit than he deserved because he was grey. look at wayward lad, it took a GREAT champion like dawn run to beat himat cheltenham but he has never had the credit he deserves or the fellow, who thrashed des i believe although in that horses later years and or best mate.
this horse is in a separate class at his best, ad i dont believe that if he had run to his best last yearthat denman would have got within yards of him. it is just the ease that he runs past the rest, from the first time i saw him run a few years back, cantering when the others are flat out. amazing.

Nope, Dessie got the credit he got because he was one of the few horses to win from 2m to 3m 6(?) (Irish National)
He jumped like a god, better than Kauto, imo, but I don't want to pick holes in either of them. I really don't.
I'll just agree to disagree with you Lu, because these two horses are greats, and I won't do either of them the disservice of findng faults to prove a point.
The only way it could ever be proven is if they ran against each other. That will obviously never happen, so I'm going to appreciate the classy horses that each decade generates without the need for comparisons.

and also people had the nerve to mention dessie in the same breath as arkle or golden miller and i have never quite got that. we can argue the toss about all the others since but no horse will ever win five gold cups and a national in record time nor would des or any other horse be able to give two stone to the winners of two subseqiuent gold cups and still thrash them like arkle. and dont forget when they were running top weight was 12.7.
des certainly did jump more consistently than kauto but on the other hand his flaw was a left hand track. lets face it yahoo was 100-1 when des finally won his gold cup. they all have their flaws ad weaknesses especally as the trend these days is too run horses less often though it may save them it gives them less opportunityto shine.
and then there were horses like carvills hill and one man, who got their careers untimely ended who knows what they might have achieved.

I agree with everything you have said GTF!!

Both superb horses in their own times. Not fair to compare. I adored Dessie and I think Kauto is a superb athlete - his fluidness of motion is pure joy to observe.

Arkle was Arkle. Untouchable, and although I never saw him, his record is impeccable. There is as yet no horse to challenge him.
However, much as I adored both Carvill's Hill and One Man, CH needed a trip, and OM struggled to get one.
Both remarkable horse in their own right, mind you! But not as versatile over various distances as D and K.

i love this horse always have since i first saw him race and today he won me a new bridle lol. i bet my oh that he would win his race and cos i he did i get a new bridle for my girl
