The field for the King george wasnt great this year. Imperial Commander probably the bst horse in the lineup besides kauot but after nearly unseating Paddy he was never going to really be in with a challenge. None of the top Irish horses competed either.
However, nothing can be taken from Kauto's performance. This year looked smoother than ever before. And to win by a distance...? Fantastic! Hope to make it to Cheltenham to see him win a third GC.
Word is his offiical rating after today will put him only behind Arkle and Flyingbolt in other words the third greatest chaser of all time.
I do think on his top form Kauto could have beaten Desert Orchid would have been one hell of a race anyway!
After today really can't say with any certainity Denman will beat Kauto at Cheltenham - its going to be one hell of a race.
It was a truly awesome win. Whether he can beat Denman in top form at Cheltenham, which is such a different course remains to be seen.
Re the Official Rating - was Flyingbolt so good? What about Golden Miller?
Arkle used to give lumps of weight away in handicaps and still beat good horses. But Kauto is pretty good!!!
In the offiicial Timeform ratings Flyingbolt was rated second to Arkle. Arkle was 212 Flyingbolt (from the same stable!) was rated 210. Then you're down to Mill House 187 and Desert Orchid 186
Kauto will be raised to approx mid 190 which conceivably means he could break the 200 mark.
Golden Miller was top class and also preceded the days of Timeform but you must remember in his day the Gold Cup was no more than a prep race for the National and was not of the stature it is now. That's not to say he was not top class because he was and his Gold Cup/National win in the same season still stands.
