I am collecting a pup in four weeks time - chosen and deposit paid. The breeder has now told me that it will for me to register and that the insurance will only kick in once registration is complete.

When I bred a litter 20 years ago the breeder (me)had to register the litter then they produced proof of this when delivery took place and the individual owners registered the pups with their chosen names. Also if I have to register and insurance doesnt come into effect until this is done there will be a risk period surely.

The breeeder is possibly meaning you have to transfer the puppy before the insurance kicks in. When I got my puppy last month she was registered by the breeder. I completed the transfer into my ownership online and they are a bit crafty because to get the free 6 weeks insurance you have to set up a direct debit for the years premium, with the option to cancel when the 6 weeks is up. They wanted £26.00 a month for my GSD

I have received quotes from other companies for half this, so although I have set up the DD to get the 6 weeks free I am shortly going to cancel it. When I was breeding pups myself I used to advise people against the KC insurance for this reason. They are just out to make money imo.
If the puppy is not registered and you havae to register it I am not sure what the insurance situation would be, and I would be a bit suspicious of the breeder to be quite honest. Perhaps a few more questions might be in order. I hope everything works out okay and good luck with your pup.

Maybe they mean the free 6 week Petplan insurance scheme? I bought a puppy a couple of months ago, when I collected him I was given the Petplan insurance details by the breeder and the insurance was in place.

I only got the Kennel Club registration documents last week and have not got around to sending them in yet with the payment. But I've already set up an annual insurance policy and didn't need any KC documents for that.

You get all sorts of insurance offers with new puppies.

Petplan offer 6 weeks free if the breeder has registered the litter, which they will ring up and activate when you collect the puppy.

The Kennel Club also offer a month (iirc) free insurance, which is applied when you send off your KC documents to transfer ownership into your name.

The breeder will have registered the litter with the KC, and have given your puppy a name based on their affix (assuming they have one). You will be given a form to fill in and return to the KC to register the puppy in your name.

The breeder will have registered the litter with the KC, and will have given your puppy a name this form will be given to you along with a pedigree it should be signed by the breeder so that when you sign the form to change the ownership of the puppy & send it back to the KC with your details your 6 weeks free insurance from the kennel club will be activated.

KC registration has a BIG impact on insurance! Once registered as a specific breed then the insurance companies can charge according to known and documented breed defects and can even use higher excesses and exclusions of cover on certain noted problems ! Just go onto an insurance websire and see the difference between crossbreds/unknown mixes and certain purebreds!

I would certainly find out what is what before you collect your pup and pay the balance of your deposit.

It is the breeder that registers the litter with the Kennel Club, where each pup is issued with a registration document and (if the breeder wishes to pay for this as an extra) a 5 generation pedigree. Most breeders provide a puppy pack, which includes free pupply insurance up to so many weeks (you get this included, think its with Petlan so your pub should already be insured/covered while you take it home, then the next day you change the insurance over to your name and pay for it to continue etc

Please be careful, there are some breeders out there that will take avantage of buyers if they dont know what they are doing unfortunately.
