My daughters gelding has taken a layer of skin off his lower hind leg, immediately cleaned and added some wound cream, bandaged it and turned him back out.

Kept a check on him to make sure there was no swelling and took the dressing off 2 days after and assessed the wound, no infection, nice & pink.

So do we keep it moist with wound cream and dressings or start to apply wound power to dry it out.

i would leave off dressings but keep it clean and apply a wound cream. i am sure the latest thinking with wounds now is to keep them moist.

Thanks for your reply Sally2008, that is my experience as well, but a few people at my yard have (as they do) been offering 'advice'.

Keep it moist. Drying out causes scab formation, when this comes off you are more likely to be left with a scar.

Keep it moist - it heals better as the skin isn't allowed to dry out and scar as it were :)

I like savlon or camrosa, a well as my own cream which is just an aqueous cream with tea tree oil mixed in it :)

Can i get intrasite from my local Saddlers???

I have been applying Multicare Cut-Heal Wound Care, will it be ok with no dressing on out in the field, am worried it will get infected. He injured himself 3 days ago.

any wound hydrogel will do same thing as intrasite gel, i am a nurse and they have discontinued intrasite gel for people but they use an alternative by a nother company and its all to do with contracts as they are all made of same stuff and do the same thing. hydrating wound is the best way to ensure speedy healing ans mimimise scar tissue formation.

I read somewhere that keeping it moist is best. I use Cut Heal, its absolutely brilliant stuff. I've used it on many cuts, one which was really really nasty (but not suitable to stitch as right on a joint) and I fully expected to leave a scar or at least white hair - using Cut Heal it healed amazingly quickly and NO scar. You just need to be careful not to get it on much hair round the wound as it takes the hair off.
