Keeping a Foreign Student Entertained

We applied for a foreign riding student 5 days ago, thinking we may get one next year. Yet to our surprise we got one immediately, and she arrived yesterday! She's a really lovely 17 year old girl from Paris and a nice rider. Pretty good english though a little shy of-course.

My question is, how much should we be "entertaining" her? We're a small riding school located in the rural west of Ireland, with camps 11-3pm, and a couple of hours of lessons in the evenings, that she can help with\ride in. We've also said that she can bring on 2 horses we have, riding and hacking them as they just aren't quite experienced for the school yet. Also mentioned if she felt up to it she could help reback a horse that was previously riding away, but was put out to grass over the winter and never restarted. Feel a little bit uncomfortable asking her to do stuff like muck out, as I have two daughters around her age, and they don't do it - I do.

Today brought her out on a long hack, and then brought my daughter's eventing pony to a XC course for her to school (although pony didn't need it) with my younger daughter's green horse. Her mother asked could she compete while here (which she hasn't done in France) but because we only do pony club and affiliated competitions, she can't compete in shows. She's coming to watch a SJ show tomorrow, and an ODE on Monday.

The only two other people we know who have had foreign students have either been
a) a massive stables, who'd have about 5 at a time and worked them like slaves
b) a family of horse producers, who have about 30 connemara ponies for schooling

So at both they would be constantly riding and riding daily, but as we're a lot smaller (13 horses, and only 2 broken without "jobs" currently) we're worried we'll be boring her a little. She's here for 4 weeks and we just don't want her to feel regret that she came to a riding school with a schedule and there's not unlimited riding!

So just wondering if anyone has ever been in the same boat before, and what have you done to keep yours content, or should this be enough? TIA

Could you not find one or two unaffiliated shows for her? Other than that, you sound like you're doing lots to use her. Are you doing non horsey stuff with her too?

Would it cost that much to sign her up so she can compete affiliated? Sure she'd be thrilled.

What about seeing if she can ride work for a local trainer?

Or have you pals in Dublin who coulddl give her a couple of cultural days?

If she looks bored why not set her to painting a bit of the yard?

What you have to offer sounds great.

What about competing on a ticket BS or BE, if that is what you do, or doing a BD Prelim, where you do't need to be registered (unless that changed this year?).

I am sure she will be happy with what you have outlined. Sometimes having a visitor is great anyway, because you may end up visiting local visitor "things" that you have never visited, despite being local!

Would it cost that much to sign her up so she can compete affiliated? Sure she'd be thrilled.

To affiliate her here will cost approx €80, and as we only have one affiliated horse atm (my daughter's) who is ironing out some stopping issues competing, we would have to affiliate a school cob at an extra cost of approx €100? Probably would not enjoy plodding around in the 60cms! but we have made arrangements for her to have a private lesson with our PC's Senior Examiner, who is very good, and also hopefully jump an unaffiliated class on little PC pony too sometime this week. Also on Saturday we are thinking we'll bring her and one of my daughters to a massive beach that's normally used for pony racing for a good gallop on some cobs!

She's used to riding bigger horses, so having a little eager-beaver 14hh eventing pony is probably a fun change in itself! Also I found out today she takes one lesson in a riding school a week, and never goes out of the arena because it's located in Paris, so I suppose what I would find a bit tedious (eg taking out hacks every day) she probably will quite enjoy.

The more she's here and getting relaxed with us, the happier I think she is, and I think she really enjoyed herself today and yesterday at the shows. We were all a bit worried because we just had a non-riding Spanish student leave, and whenever we brought her to shows (incl. staying a weekend in Dublin at the RDS) passed midday she was very open about how bored she was... and as our new lady is at home\stables all day and not at school, we wouldn't want her to feel the same way.

Thanks everyone :-)

Dressage Ireland have lots of shows in the midlands and western region she could ride unregistered.
Whereabouts in the west are you? In mayo plenty of yards have summer sj and dressage leagues (hanleys and claremorris ec)

I didn't even know this was a thing! Do the need accomodation alone ever? I'd be happy to put a student up.

I don't know how things work in Ireland but in England you can compete a horse at an affiliated show jumping venue 'on a ticket'. Can you not do that it Ireland?
