Having just got a grey pony I am after any tips for keeping a pony grey and preventing tails getting a yellowey tinge that they tend to get.

Any tips would be greatfully recieved

Keep him clean to start with - my grey comes up lovely, but I regularly wash his tail and he is bathed in the summer when he starts to get grubby before his fur stains. Winter is a bit tougher as he is a grubby so-and-so but I do sponge bath his hocks and still wash his tail. There are loads of specialist shampoos out there, but they won't help you if his fur is stained rather than just dirty! Good luck :)

Shampoo, with loads of scrubbing :), rugs and a good spray of a coat conditioner will help stop stains sticking to the coat. I use the absorbine show sheen, and really like it for my grey.

I think other than that, learn to live with a few stains :D I love my boy to be immaculate, as I do with all my horses, but I sometimes we do have to go with a few poo stains every now and again :) :)

The best shampoo is Wahl Diamond White! also Cowboy Magic stain remover.

my grey has lived out all summer and with a good groom every day and immediate sponging off of stains he is pretty clean. I also find his light turnout cleans him off - it's an Amigo with a shiny lining. I don;t know why it works but it does. I haven;t even had to bath him as I don;t want to strip the oils from his coat, just done his mane, tail and legs.

Tail poo is another story, Tail is washed once a fortnight! Seven Day Mud Away is put in to stop poo sticking!

I think you just get used to a few stains, although everyone comments on how clean mine looks! :)

I've given up worrying whether my grey horse is clean or not - the only time he truly is in the winter when he's clipped and rugged up.

However, I do keep his tail short, with plenty of show sheen. And only brush or cactus cloth off mud when it is really dry.

Apparently soaking the tail in steradent will make them white.
Also having googled the above (to check I had remembered correctly), you will pull up some old Horse and Hound Threads on this.

Daz in hot water & Fairy Liquid seem to be popular choices - but obviously do not get in on the skin. Apparently the Daz option allows you to watch you horses tail go white before your eyes.

I've never had a grey, but the mind boggles

Apart from regular baths and tail washing a tail bag works wonders - attach to the back of the rug with velcro.

Also good for those that poop in their tails or those with thin tails. Protects them from dirt, fading, getting caught in things and from being chewed

Tail is washed weekly - Cowboy magic Shine in Yellow out is very good, then loads of conditioner - just normal hair conditioner as the drier the hair the more easily it absorbs stains. Silicone detanglers increase the absorbancy of the hair too, so stain more easily.

For detangler I use Equss Survivor Detangler - its silicone free, then plait the tail and leave it or put the plait in a tail bag.

The only way is to keep on top of it - My grey has his tail washed twice weekly and his hocks washed at the same time- tend to use the end of his tail to scrubb hocks ! - stable stains dealt with as soon as they are spotted (within reason!) - he has a tail bag on and a snuggy hood to keep head and long mane clean (also stops rugs rubbing the base of the mane) stabled on cushionbed bedding and skipped out last thing and regular throughout the day if in (ok I'm lucky have horses at work with me ) Use Supreme Products - have found the Blue tint liquid really useful with blue shampoo. Just for the finishing touch on a nice clean white tail just before entering the ring - spray with Supreme Products Sparkle spray - fab for sunny days / indoor under lights !

Hard work but worth every effort !

I have four greys

I absolutely cannot live without WOW whitener for their tails, which I keep plaited up in a tail wrap in the winter, I have also recently discovered Chestfields total Body Wash which is sooo much quicker than shampooing and great for rinsing off after riding and keeps them sparkling between shampoos :)

I find blue washing up liq really works i have no idea why!I also use Bold on the bottom of his tail ( not the dock ) which seems to do the trick.
Good Luck!

Along the same lines what do people do to make their greys stand out on show day? I'm always envy people with their shiny bays as you never really get the same effect on greys :(
