What stories do you have?
I love hearing all the stories of you somehow hiding a horse from the OH, I want photos and stories please and how long were you successful for it?

When i was 16 i bought an unhandled pony in secret from my parents! Because i felt sorry for it. they did find out after a few months and i was pretty unpopular....
 
It was pretty touch and go though as for a bit it looked like pony might be pregnant!! But fortunately not and i only paid £150 anyway. she was an awesome pony, i dont regret it!
 
I bought my latest boy and didn't tell my OH for a month. I hate keeping secrets though and one day we were sitting in the garden having a drink and he was saying what a good mood he was in and I confessed. I still lied about how much I paid but that is seperate earnings and bank accounts for you! I got away with it as horse was at the yard I work at, whereas my other two I keep at home.
 
:DWe used to have a field on the other side of the valley, we could see the horses from the house.

I always bought white ponies, they were interchangeable ;) If OH, love him, asked if one was new I would trot out the old "Oh, that one, nooooooo, had him for ages, that is xyz" :D

Nowadays it isn't quite as simple, although palominos are interchangeable too ;)
 
Have seperate bank accs etc, but OH is still tight and doesnt like to waste money, so i told him cobby was only on loan, after a year he said why didnt i send him back home, so i had to be honest and say i bought him, he laughed and said he had a funny feeling about it all along.
 
I bought the wrong horse for my daughter, took a while to realise then was offered a pony retiring from polo. Told my hubby she was coming to stay for a few weeks a week or so after she arrived thinking he'd be mad about the extra expense. Finally fessed up when Saffy had been with us 2 months. He just said in a horrified way what about Crystal, you aren't selling her or anything? Didn't give hoot about the money !

So, yes I kept it secret, but had no need to. You don't enter into comitments like horses lightly. As I have just read in another post - costs as much to keep the right one as the wrong one - wise words indeed !

Crystal is now mine - and we're having fun? Love this forum for help... just need to teach Crystal to read.
 
I hid my first horse from OH until he see his bank statement a month later to find out he also paid for him My second one i hid for six months then fessed up. We have been together thirtyone years he just given up and lets me do it now
 
My mum bought a secret horse and kept it in a rented paddock down the lane for a good few months. Got away with it until the blasted thing got out and dad got a call in the middle of the night:
"Your horse is in my garden eating the bedding plants."
"Horse? We haven't got a horse?!"
"I think you ought to have a word with your wife..."
 
I dont hide my horse but I'm economical with the truth when it comes to bills. I've returned back to horses after about a 15 yr break and so I keep telling him how cheap it all is nowadays.
We have a joke that everything to do with the horse costs' under a hundred pounds'. But as he likes to point out the rugs etc. are cheaper than years ago but nowadays you have to have about 10. So thats 10 x £100
 
I've told this story on here before...but....I aquired a very underweight Standardbred X filly. Someone else on this forum put up the link to her, she was advertised on a well known dealer's website, the photo showed her terribly thin, so ribby. I couldn't sleep for thinking of her. The long and the short of it was a very good friend and I whizzed over with a lorry and bought her. We took her to my yard where after being checked out by the vet I turned her out with my herd.

Now, my OH knew she was there, he saw her whenever he visited but he thought she belonged to my lorry friend and was just there to have some good grazing. I introduced him to her, they quite liked each other, in fact she REALLY liked him and would gaze starry eyed and goofily at him whenever he turned up. So far so good. I already had 3 horses though and we were at our limit financially. I did a lot of juggling with the housekeeping budget over the next year so he never actually realised we were supporting another horse. It was one of those situations where the longer I didn't tell him she was mine the harder it got to confess. Occasionally he would ask 'when IS she going home?' (back to my lorry friend) and I would come up with convoluted excuse involving lorry friend's naughty colt and dodgy fencing, all fabricated and each time the excuses got more creative. Oooops!

Filly filled out and started growing, oh she was so pretty! And sweet tempered. Things finally came to a head when filly got a hoof abcsess which needed, eventually, vet treatment and 3 weeks box rest out of the mud and OH was saying that lorry friend had to pay the vet bill. Well riders, time for me to 'fess up...aaaaargh!!....that was hard, but OH was suprisingly lovely about it (had owned filly for a year and a half by this point) he was lovely at first and said 'thats fine' but sadly he went on to say 'it means we've got something to sell when we are broke'. Humph!! He lost a lot of brownie points that day.

A year and a half on from that and she's still with us and OH has accepted she's part of the family and not going anywhere thank goodness!

I havent myself (only due to the fact I'd be super duper excited and need to talk about it 24/7) but my ex boss did.

She had about 10-15 show ponies at any one time (I was her groom), the amount of times we went to pick up new neds and were told to quickly put it in the field before 'grumps' sees it ... lol ... :D
 
I couldn't do it. We are a partnership. We decide things together. I can usually talk him round anyway! Since we've been together we have got three horses, two dogs, two cats and fifteen hens! Most of the more recent equines I've had were for his son anyway.. He is another that mucks out and does the horses when I'm at work, so he'd notice.
 
I haven't but a friend owns a pony that used to belong to me - her partner thinks she has it on loan!! She thinks he may approach me one day to buy the pony as a surprise for her!! - her instructions are to take his money and give it to her!!!:)
 
No, & I wouldn't be with someone who I felt I did have to hide it from. When I bought a spur of the moment sympathy buy, I rang him to give a garbled explanation of why I'd be late home. When I got in & explained properly, my only problem was convincing him that it wouldn't help matters for him & his friends to go round to the old owners & have words about it not being acceptable to mistreat animals.

I did it because I put him on field livery, seperate to the livery that the others were on

Current mare was the YM's and i was "helping" with her for about 6 months before I actually admitted she was mine
 
No, would not do it...dont see the point when we can discuss such things and make a decision as a couple as to what can be bought.
 
HAve to say, I don't anymore, and I am down to one now. When OH suspected that an additional equine had joined the household I got the me or him strop, and I decided that my 15 year relationship was not worth loosing, so he went to a lightweight friend with small children
 
I buy what I want. I mention it to hubby before it arrives. He looks forward to meeting new ones when they arrive. Sometimes I'll discuss a prospective before I buy it usually to get a second lot of thoughts about the logistics to having it shipped home.
 
I have a horse.... which my parents dont know about........




I bought her as a companion - she was "on loan"... to keep other horse company.... lost other horse over a month ago

little filly now lives on full livery elsewhere :o (shes two)....and will be brought back in 2014 to be broken


if i mention her name (grace) its swifly followed by "that girl from uni" :o :o i have slipped up twice now.... :D

Yep. It's essentially lying, and the same as the other person keeping something from you...like another woman?!

My dad recently bought another horse. My mother was quite against it to begin with, as he'd been disappointed with another horse we'd tried to race that had suffered an injury. Plus she knew he planned to spend big money and she didn't like that idea either. But they sat down and had a proper discussion about it, and she realised that his heart was set on it, and it had the potential to make him really happy. Plus he told her he had a set budget and he wasn't going to go above that (which he didn't). She let him buy the horse!
