I'm looking into the possibility of moving to South London and wondered weather it was possible to take my horse with me and how much it would cost/far I would have to travel.

I would be living in Herne Hill SE21 and would love to get an idea of how far away the nearest livery yards would be and what it would cost.

Thanks in advance for any help, it is greatly appreciated!

I would say Dulwich Riding School but I'm not sure if they do liveries. Can't think of anywhere else in SW London, but if you're willing to travel by public transport or do more than a 30 minute drive, then Bexley (NW Kent) has mountains of stables, which is where I go (I'm in south east London). Feel free to pm me if you want anymore info :)

Loads of places around Bexley/North Cray with access to train stations and off road hacking. I have a friend at Shannon Leigh and she likes it, but there's plenty more adjacent to that. Alternatively you could try somewhere like Hayes Lane farm stables, just outside of Bromley - which is easy to get to on the train from Herne Hill, or if you need a competition type yard, somewhere like Prestons Farm at Shoreham is near to the train station and about 20 miles from you. All of these yards are very different and therefore in differing price brackets, so it pays to do a bit of investigating. :)

Lots down the A3. If you are made of money, there are yards in Wimbledon & around Richmond Park & hacking is fab. More on either side of A3-Chessington-Claygate area. Many yards in Epsom-Headley. PM me if you want more info. Everything from DIY to Full livery.

There's plenty of yards in Bexley, none that I'd particularly recommend, but you'd have a good selection there.
If you were prepared to travel slightly further out that way, you'd find some better yards and with more grazing, towards Swanley, Eynsford, Dartford way.

Thanks for the replies guys, I'll have a look into a few of those.

Could someone possibly give me an idea of what it costs around these areas. I'm in North Wales and I guess its a lot cheaper here. At the moment I pay £104 per month for haylage/hay and DIY livery (unlimited grazing and stable). It would be great to have an idea what DIY livery and half livery (morning turnout) would cost. Thanks.

I live down the road from where you are moving too (10 mins south) and keep my horse in Bromley br4, I work in Mayfair and its very doable :) I drive to work everyday (through Hermes hill) stop at home then go to yard I have 5 day assisted livery so like to make my own feeds every day.

£8 a day for livery! Or £2.50 turnout £ 5 muck out (livery no brainier) boxes tend to be £90 to £130 ish a month and hay is about £6 a bale. Shavings (hunters) £8.60. Hope that helps

don't know how set you are on South London, but there are a lot more options if you live in East London (which is also a lot cheaper to live in). I think I've been to look around almost every yard in the east of London, so if you need any info just shout :)

Your biggest problem anywhere in London will be turnout - but there are some options :)

Serbask you'll pay a lot more around London than in Wales. I used to be in SE London/Kent borders. DIY livery was about 35 pounds a week, poor grazing, poor fencing, overcrowded fields. Most yards include in the price putting in the breakfast (which you leave outside the stable) and turning out. Horses stabled at night all year and 24/7 if it rains in winter. Expensive small bale hay, usually not enough room to buy in bulk or store large bales. Full livery is about 80 pounds per week and will include half a scoop of pony nuts and chaff twice daily, two slices of small bale hay and half a small bale of straw per week. If that's not enough you'll need to go DIY. It's do-able, it works sort of, but you'll find it a big culture shock. further out into Kent eg Bromley, Meopham things are a little better, but DIY tends to mean total DIY, not practical to visit a yard 20 miles away twice daily. A friend of mine has had to go on full livery 40 miles from home to find a suitable yard for a quirky horse.

Thanks everyone.

I'm moving to be with my boyfriend who already lives in Herne Hill so I don't have any choice on location.

At the moment my two horses are on 4 acres to themselves with possible 24 hour turnout and stables. My old man is 22 and would be staying where he is to retire. I couldn't imagine not having my girl with me but it seems that her quality of life would be a lot better if she stayed in North Wales.

The prices aren't as high as I thought they might be which is good.
