Can I please have advice/ideas on how I can keep my white horse white so that I don't have to keep washing him before an event which isn't always convenient when it is cold/chilly.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Its what you get when you buy a whitey im afraid. You can flyrug/rainsheet and use wraps and keep them in the rain and mud and the like but what life is that?

Thanks for the tips guys, I do like my horse eau de naturel in the summer, it was more the sprays to stop the mud sticking that I was after. Any other ideas please?

Cowboy magic green away is good for the occasional poo stain gathered overnight. Otherwise you just have to keep on top of it - if you leave stains in place the hair goes yellow and is much harder to get clean. Clipping helps - less to stain. But I'm not a fan of coating them in sprays etc in the summer - its effectively putting oil or lacquer on their coat and I worry about that making them warmer. (No evidence to that - just a personal feeling). I do use pig oil and sulphur on legs in the winter though.

In my experience there are two options - (1) leave everything au naturel and just scrub loads before an event (hot water and a good rug (e.g. thermatex) should help them not get too chilled) , or (2) keep on top of it! I do the latter - my white grey is stabled in a no fill turnout to repel as many poo stains as possible. In the morning I spend 5 minutes with hot water and a sponge removing any stable stains. His field is pretty dry so he's out naked as much as possible as I don't have problems with mud (I know I'm lucky in that regard). Mane and tail washed every week/every other week depending on how dirty they get. Tail very loosely plaited when stabled and when turned out in the winter. And if all else fails, a bit of chalk powder!

I now have a blue and white (grey) horse after years and years of chestnut, dun and bay horses, as others have said avoid letting any odd stains "set" a quick sponge off with weak shampoo solution or some stain remover type product ( nettex do a good one) full neck rugs and fly sheets are your friend- I only do naked turnout when fields are nice and dry :-) (like today!)
I wash the tail once or twice a week and lots of mane and tail or canter type product to stop dirt sticking.
i really don't feel I spend much time cleaning him and he generally looks pretty sparkly white.
oh and make sure you have plenty of sunscreen as they get sunburn far more easily :!
i am a real convert to the colour now and LOVE my chap!

There are a fair few stain removing sprays on the market that may be worth a look into. I'm not sure how good they've been for a large area, but good for a little touch up!

I have a coloured with white legs, mane and tail. About a year ago I changed my bedding from straw to shavings and I was surprised how much cleaner he is on shavings. As the shaving are so absorbent it seems to prevent stable stains. He does have a big deep bed of shavings though.

I also find plaiting tail loosely stops my horse from pooing on it. I use lots of mane/tail spray on tail and hocks too. When I do shampoo I use normal shampoo to get the worst of the dirt out then I wash again with Touch of Silver twice a week Brightening shampoo (for humans). I lather it up and leave for 10 mins before rinsing to get the full effect. It smells great which is a bonus.
