Morning all, I’m looking for a little help feeding wise and I’d like to keep it simple. My brain works best if I think logically. Haha

So...I’ve had a lovely barefoot trimmer visit me and my Clyde and wow what an improvement in her feet. I knew things weren’t as good as they could be and of course, feeding plays a big part in foot health.

I’d like to make some small changes to her diet. She’s currently fed 2 mugs of micronised linseed, two mugs of fast fibre, a Stubbs scoop of high protein nuts (she loves the crunch) and Forageplus young horse balancer. This is split over two feeds. The nuts have some GM nasties in and I’d like to replace it with a high fibre, high protein but low sugar nuts that more organic....for a better word. As you can see, I’m no expert.

So, basically I’d like to keep the linseed, fast fibre, balancer but need a better nut! What do you all use?

My Clyde is out 24/7 on (currently) poorish grass, access to hay ad-lib but she’s not a great eater and needs the extra bucket feed to keep her weight maintained. Thanks.

Simple systems feeds are really good - they do a low and higher energy grass nut. However I always soaked grass nuts (they are very hard!) - so not sure they would fit if your horse likes the crunch!

Also check out thunderbrooks, they also have a good range of feed without items such as wheetfeed (which is in fast fibre)

I use dengie grass nuts. It’s says on the bag it doesn’t recommend feeding them dry as it could cause choke. But I really like feeding them and my mare loves them! Vet recommended as her teeth are so poor

Grass nuts have to be soaked before feeding. Mine get carrots for crunchiness in their feed. If she struggles to hold condition then I'd probably try her on oats, but would feed soaked beet pulp and/or alfalfa alongside those to keep the calcium ratios balanced. Not sure what's in Fast Fibre, as have never fed it, so thought I should mention the calcium side of things re the oats.
