Has anyone got any tips for keeping dogs flea free?

My boyfriends dog is an 18month old working cocker spaniel, he is taken to work with my boyfriend daily where he comes into contact with countless other dogs and runs freely through undergrowth.

We have been using Johnson's Veterinary Fleas Tables which do seem to be initially very effective, but I don't want to be giving him a tablet twice weekly to keep on top of them.

We have also been using Staykil Plus around the house which has be recommended very highly (seems to kill everything!).

I have never found Frontline very effective, but we have used some in our most recent defleaing attempt!

Is it just a case of regular washing of the dog with anti-flea shampoo, spraying and hovering the house, regular washing of dog bed, tablets and frontline? Or has anyone managed to come up with a system that works?

Go to the vets and get a product such as Advocate, Bravecto, Nexguard etc.
TBH I don't think a lot of the stuff you get in supermarkets or pet shops does anything. Frontline stopped working for my dog years ago.

If the dog has fleas then no doubt your house will be full of them. Good hoover of the house, hot wash any soft furnishings such as dog bed, sofa covers etc. Get a good spray such as Acclaim or RIP fleas.

ETA: Just seen you use Staykill, not used that one before but if it is anything like the above then should be fine.

The 4fleas is effective at killing fleas on the dog at the time so is good to stop fleas coming home but it has no residual effect.

You need to treat the home and get a long acting treatment as above. Frontline spray still seems to work but ask your vet wahi is working.

Staykill is ok but needs using liberally & don't forget to do the car too.
 
I own 6 dogs,three jrt and three bavarian bloodhounds;these are mostly working dogs during the shooting season.THe bloodhounds are scent hounds, used to find wounded boars,roe and red dear.The jrt are simply what they are,fabulous dogs to unmask and chase wild boars, efficient with the vermin,mice rats and dare I admit it,fox.
I give each dog a pill of Nextguard on the FIRST of each MONTH.
That's it,nothing else,before I used quantaties of useless sprays ,shampoo's etc now I am completely free of ticks,fleas.I promise you this is not an advert,but the stuff really works....
 
By the way,just as a pm; the rest of the year these dogs live with us and we sleep around them!
Believe me,my husband and my children would soon tellme if they had fleas!
 
Hi,you can only get'Nextguard' by prescription,ie your vet.It is quite expensive,but if you calculate all the useless products one tends to buy,well frankly it comes out as beeing cheaper....
I live in Belgium,but I believe it is available in the UK.
 
I use nexgaurd too. Daisy got fleas last year, and despite treating her twice with frontline, and the house they remained. Then we used nexgaurd and the fleas were dead within hours, never to reappear.
 
Yes s4sugar,I stand correctedyou are quite right;it is called 'nexgard' and I didn't know it was bad for breeding/lactating bitches.Thank you for warning me.
I have JRT who ocasionally suffers from pancreatitis,she has a few bleeding episodes, so I asked my vet wether she could still be treated with this product; he told that there were no indication against it....I think I shall inquire and dig a little deeper, l am lucky as I live close to a very good vet university.
 
I tried Nexguard for my dogs and it was great for my spaniel but it made my GSD vomit ...it's a common side affect and usually improves with use...and although we tried her with it again the vomiting was just as bad so be cautious if you have a dog with a sensitive stomach.
