One of the ponies has cut her leg fairly badly, but the vet doesn't think it's worth trying stitch so we're just keeping it clean, using wound cream, and letting nature take it's course.

Trouble is we're infested with flies. All the ungents we have that will keep flies of the wound will also stop it breathing. Anyone have any suggestions ow we can leave the wound to breathe while keeping flies off?

I have been using Cooper's fly repellent near a cut on Jerry's leg. It is the only fly repellent I have used that works really well.

Weirdly our the best fly repelant for any situation we've found is wound powder! I have no idea what make it is or anything but flys hate it! Problem is its white so if we're out it can only go on white legs! I would put it on faces but doubt it'd go down too well with visitors!

If appearance is not an issue try tar spray--like Stockholm tar in aerosol
Bought to spray 'nicks' when sheep are clipped
Antiseptic fly repellant and lasts a few days depending on rain

there is a product called heal and seal you spray it on it puts like an cling film layer over it it protects soothes and let it breath keep flys away and to wash it off just was it with warm water dry then re apply!

my horse came in with a nasty kick. like your situation the vet didnt feel it warrented stitching just keep it clean and again like you the flies were more than a pest!

clean it as usual, esure area is dry and apply sudocrem sparingly it will act as a barrier i did this twice a day and the would heald just nicely
