Some of you may know that Beau came in the other day with a huge bite on his neck:

He is on anitbiotics, but I wondered if anyone has any tips of what I can use to keep it clean AND keep the flies off it.

He came in yesterday with a few flies inside the wound and I dont want maggots!

At the moment he is having the wound hosed when he comes in, then hibiscrubbed.

Before he goes out he is having some cream put all over it, cream espec for flystrike, think its meant for sheep, YO recommended it, however with all the rain we are having its just washing off.

If anone knows any good products I would be grateful.

when my foal cut her face open i was told to smear vasaline over the wound to keep flies and mud out. is pain in the butt to get of as you need warm water but it did the trick!

Put something like Wound Heal on it. It forms a very resistent barrier to everything, and is excellent for treating wounds like this as well.

Yup, you need something that seals it - so waterproof & ideally with anti-fly properties. In addition to this, personally I'd apply Coopers fly repellant BELOW the wound, fairly close but obviously not touching it - don't apply above just in case the rain makes it run into the wound.

If it becomes troublesome, you may have to consider keeping him in, poor horsey.

Thanks Sal E, yep Im been keeping him in most of the day to help the problem, good idea about the fly repellant below the wound, I was reluctant to put any on for fear of irritatng the wound, but that is a good idea!

Can you get Swat in the UK? It is a pretty effective fly repellent/wound cream that actually seems to work. It is made by Farnam.

I have a pot of Equaide in my first aid box that is brilliant for sealing wounds against infection (especially in places you can't bandage) but promoting healing at the same time. It was recommended to me by a poster on this forum. Here's the link:

Another tip that I think came from this forum is to use a garlic oil capsule like you buy in health shops, just around the edges of any wound to deter flies.

Intrasite gel, goes on like a clear glue but sets solid. It breathes as well so if there's any infection it can get out. I use it loads on Pidge as he is so accident prone and have found it the best stuff IMO to keep wounds clean from mud, flies etc

protocon is the only thing that's ever worked for me - when I got Ty last year he was forever cutting himself - it acts as a barrier and antisepctic cream so stops the nasties getting in!

theres a spray that is anteseptic and forms a clear barrier, cant remember what its called but its really good

You need summer fly cream - specifically designed for keeping flies off wounds. It is bright yellow and you can buy it from most tack shops for just under a tenner.

Thanks my friend has put some of that in my tack box for me, so do you wash it off?

no it will just either peel off later on or I normally let it come off naturally as then it has usually scabbed up unerneath. let us know how you get on?
Sorry not been online much as laptop died and had to get another one yesterday and not quite set up yet!

Thanks I will try that today Sue.

Thanks for the tip about the garlic capsules MM, wouldnt have thought of that!

Well its his last day of antibiotics today, the swelling has gone down but Im getting worried about maggots because everything Ive tried so far is just washing off in all this rain.
