Keeping horses at home - did you compromise on location?

Hello! I’m in the very very lucky position of looking for a house where we can keep the horses at home. We’d like to stay in the area where we are now as we have friends & it’s a lovely place to be. However, because lots of other people obviously think the same, it’s really expensive & we haven’t been able to find anything at all within our budget.

So, we’re starting to think about moving out of the area - maybe 30 minutes away so we can get something we can afford! Just looking for your experiences as I’m so obsessed with getting the horses home I maybe don’t think things through!

Those of you that have done the same, did you have to move away from your preferred area to be able to do so? Has it worked out ok? The area we’re looking at is very nice, lots of off-road hacking , commutable for work etc. It’s just unfamiliar territory & I don’t like change :)

Like I say, not moaning at all as this is something I’ve always wanted – just want to make sure that I’m not being awful to think of putting my horses above my friends etc. Sorry if this all sounds me me me but my OH says as long as he can have Sky & internet he doesn’t mind where we go – men, don’t you just love them!

Thanks very much!!

Yes, we moved away from our family and friends to where we are now 17 years ago and haven't regretted it for a moment! For us it seemed stupid to continue living in a commuter area when I was no longer working in London and OH could work almost anywhere, and moving meant we could afford a small property with land. We were 45 mins - 1 hour away from most family and friends so still easy to go and visit and we very quickly made new friends. I'd recommend looking for a property near a decent pub, because it gives you the opportunity to get to know other locals very quickly and easily!

Yes I made that move about 2 years ago and have absolutely no regrets. We are about 45mins further away and my husband can have a good hour 15mins commute but we both love it. Friends visit more than they ever did before and we have made good friends in our neighbours. In reality 30-45mins drive is not far.
We got so much more for our money and in better condition so it was win/win.

Good luck

I moved from Berkshire to Lincolnshire - the sole reason being the price of property. We swapped £ for £ our ugly 2 1/2 bed semi on an estate for a 4 bed detached with 12 acres ! (it did need quite a bit of modernisation but even so). We've made new friends and close friends and family come and stay rather than us just call in for a couple of hours, but honestly I've never regretted it (other than the odd minute in mid winter when the weather really makes you wish for a livery yard and a day in bed!!)
You'll never know unless you try!

Oh thanks so much - just what I needed to hear! Good tip about the pub as well, hadn't thought of that. Right, I feel a spot of property hunting coming on this weekend :)
