Keeping In 24 hrs After Worming?

Is this a necessity? I thought the whole point of worming is to kill the worms and therefore it would not matter if the horses poo them out onto the grazing?

In the olden days, wormers did not kill the worms, they just made them dopey so they would let go of the gut wall and were given with a purgative which would ensure that they were then passed by the horse. Modern wormers do kill the worms and so there is no need to keep the horse in for 24 hours anymore. It drove me nuts that my current yard insisted on keeping the horses in after worming, even to the extent of bringing in the 24 hour grass kept youngsters for 24 hours which is asking for colic in my opinion, but they have now stopped doing it thankfully.

If you have used an ivermectin wormer and have collies you need to make sure the dogs don't get at the horse poo for several days post worming.

i have always kept in for 24hrs and on occasions have seen some life worms expelled so in my option they are better in for 24 hrs than the risk of being re infected

For the sake of dogs and so my vet tells me, for the dung beatles, the horses should be kept in for 24 hours afterwards.

We don't, never have and yard is now on Intelligent Worming, we've been told no need by them too.

I've never done that! we just make sure that the fields are cleared of muck every day! the only time I found a horse to poo out worms was when I got my youngster in Feb and they were all dead when they came out! have never seen a worm before or after this and I've had my mare 11 years!
