right hello again, quick question.. people have given me lots of schooling ideas to apronch fences and corners ect but people have sadi i need to keep my legs underneeth me more, but this sounds easy so ill try it but then before i know it it back, like my legs dont move when riding there just a tad too foward and not underneeth me enough apparently, just wondered what i could do it keep! it there? like excises?
Imagine pointing your knee at the floor and your heel at horse's hind hoof - then sit down on top of that picture
Seems to work with many of my pupils.
For jumping you are allowed your toes to peek ouot in front of your knee as it strengthens your jumping position. If they are creeping too far back then they might need to be shorter.
Standing trot is the best exercise for having your legs in the right place as you can't stay up there if they move off your centre of balance. You shouold be able to do this exercise with your knees softly bent and hips forward.
You'll only be able to stand up in your stirrups for any length of time if your legs are under you, so yeah, what Galaxy23 said. I tried it again recently (having done this LOADS as a kid). It was harder than I thought (bad habits creeping in!)
Working without stirrups should help (especially in sitting trot as your legs will have to be in the correct position otherwise you won't be able to absorb the movement)
Also, a good way of checking whether your legs are in the right position is to ask yourself: 'If the horse was taken away from under me, would I be able to land on my feet?' If the answer is yes than your legs are in the correct position.
