Hi all,

Just wondering really, does anybody keep their tack in their stable?

I've just moved and I dont have a lot of space to keep my things at the new yard, and the tackroom is left open a large portion of the day, so I was considering keeping my saddle/bridle etc in my stable to keep it safer and closer to hand than my car!

Obviously would keep it in a tack locker of some description, otherwise it's not safe at all, from opportunists or my horse! I was just wondering how many people do this? If so, what kind of locker/secure box do you use?

I have seen someone do this. The locker was steel, about 5' high and 2' square. It was bolted to the concrete floor. It looked like a large gun locker.

I keep my tack and things in a locker in the tack room but I always bring my saddle home. It cost too much and a pad lock is too easy to break. An alternative is to get one of those hugh gear bags that will hold a saddle, bridle and grooming things, then you are only carrying one bag to and from the car.

When I was younger I used to have a steel cabinet in my stable which was bolted to floor and padlocked. Even better others used to build a cupboard into the corner of the stable so there were no corners. Didnt use to keep tack in it (as we had a good safe tack room) but kept grooming kits boots etc in it. I have to say now with my sensible adult head on and having seen how destructive some horses are I probably wouldnt put anything in the stable that had sharp edges or corners or could be knocked over or rubbed on.

I was thinking about one of those carry all bags, but purely for convenience sake was looking at putting a tack locker in the stable, I don't think he'd miss the space as its a generous size stable, my only concern would be if I used a metal one and he injures himself on a corner of it?

I do have a little bit of space outside my stable, I hadn't thought of putting it there actually, I'll see if there's space later, thanks :-)

I have done. My stable at home is huge so no issue putting a locker in it.
Also while at livery I kept one of those bin lockers in mine, but was too scared to leave my tack!

Just to say I have a galvanised steel tack locker which I bought off ebay. It is made by a company called Zaddle. I wouldn't recommend it, it's very flimsy and I don't think my tack is particularly safe in it.
I haven't seen many different ones so I don't know how mine compares to others, but I can say the Robinsons lockers are much better and sturdier with a better lock, I wish I'd shelled out the extra 40 quid or so for one of those!....I don't know if there are others out there better again though, just wanted to warn you to avoid the Zaddle ones.

I have an Ifor Williams tack pack which you could put in a stable. It has no sharp edges as its plastic. It won't stand up to someone serious about breaking in but most things won't anyway. It's meant to take two 17.5 inch saddles but really one is fine in it, two is a hassle.

We have tack lockers in our stables. The stables are big, 14x12, so they go at the front, where the extra two feet are.. They are on little legs to allow pee to drain under them, and bolted to the wall. Never had any problems with horses injuring themselves (corners aren't sharp) apart from sweet itchers using them as itching posts on bad days. I'm sure they would be fairly easy to break into if someone really wanted, but the fact that they're in the stable makes them out of sight.. They hold a set of tack, grooming kit, hats and whips etc if need be. These ones were from Robinsons.

That was exactly why I was thinking honey08, tucked away in the corner, out of sight. I may look at the ifor tack pack as I was hoping there'd be a plastic equivalent, just feel like it'd be more robust, not getting dented if kicked etc? I know my tack would b safer at home, but I'd worry about it getting knocked around in my car and forgetting it when I want to ride, I'm not the most organised sometimes lol

Look for the tack packs second hand. I got mine brand new for half what the new price is. I use mine to transport tack in the trailer and well and I have used it far more than I thought I would. :)

If you insure your tack, I think you will find that leaving it in a tack locker will invalidate your cover. I would take it home and if physically carting it around gets painful, buy a saddle trolley so you can load it all up from your boot and then take it over to your horse.

They're not cheap at all, you're right. I also wouldn't want something that actually says tack locker on the front either.

Welcome to the forum, what a strange thing to do for your first post, pull up an old thread and advertise a website on it..............hmmm

I bought my tack locker second hand from a leaving livery - new ones are £500, and they need an angle grinder to get them off. Couldn't be without it.

My tack box is in my stable. Its a big wooden box with three big locks on it.

Its deep enought to take my saddles sitting on the plastic domes and two storage boxes stacked on top of each other. My dad built it and my horses can move around their stable no bother with it there :)
