Keeping trailer in field

I've bought a trailer to be picked up next week. I rent land rather than being on a livery yard, and while I am allowed to store the trailer on said land, its not my preference due to mud etc. I've called a few local places and had no joy with finding anyone else to store it. Its a BIG trailer, an Equi-trek, so I'm a bit worried about it a)getting stolen and b)sinking into the mud and disappearing forever. Does anyone else keep their trailer in a field? The nibbly 4 year old will be kept well away by means of electric fencing. Was considering those caravan winter wheels you can put on to replace the tyres to make it less attractive for thieves. Does anyone else keep their trailer in a field? Any tips? Ta.

I have done in the past, depends if you can reverse in 👍 or have to drive in and turn round. 👎if its wet
Is it worth getting a few mud control mats to make a raft to park on
I don't trust my reversing skills so would be driving in and turning around :( The mud mats are a great idea, I'll have a google and see if I can get some by next weekend

I 2nd the idea of putting mud control mats down but do please make sure that your electric fence is effective; I used to know a lovely ID mare who injured herself badly on a trailer in the field on a livery yard.

Thank you. I have Jurassic park levels of electric fencing. It would take down an elephant. I have Welsh ponies who have a strange immunity to electric fencing. Hence cranking it up to the point a T Rex would think twice 😅

We once rented a bit of space on a secure farm yard to store a large 16ft trailer we didn’t have space for. It was only 20 quid a month. Think the farmer …sadly, quite rightly, thought that space rental in the massive farm sheds was more lucrative than farming. More farmers are likely offering similar in unused sheds.
Worth a knock on farmers doors to ask.
Also, a rural automotive large yard selling larger vehicles also offered rental parking space.
They often don’t advertise they offer this service, but many entertain the idea once put to them. If it’s a secure yard, worth having a look around locally.

Good shout, I'll ask the farmer who owns the field.

Can be useful shade and shelter from winds for ponies even if electric taped off. I agree mud control mats, make sure you stagger them when laying them as they will be firmer. Remember with equitrek u will need to be exact in your reversing as you can't manually move it... I would be tempted to get a camera like reolink to put on front of trailer a. For security and b. To help reverse as you can point it at hitch and watch self reverse up to it (you could unclip it when towing if worried about wind). Big sign saying trailer tracked and camera monitored !!

What do you mean by staggering the mats? Sorry I'm completely new to this. Is the reolink a reversing camera? Like what you'd have in a car? If so I definitely want one.

If you buy mud control mats have a look at their laying guide. Don't lay them so they make a big square but more like you would lay bricks if that makes sense.

Reolink isn't a reversing camera but you can put a SIM card in and power it from a small solar panel (you can buy reolink from Amazon with the solar panel) so no electric or WiFi required, you can then view the live footage on your phone and camera swivels 360 degrees. Check ponies, or point it at tow hitch to help you reverse. You can also set it to make siren noise and alert you if detects movement !! Smarty do a very cheap pay monthly SIM card, think mines £5 a month.

Is there nowhere close enough that does caravan storage. Might be worth that for security. We had our Equi trek broken into some years ago. It had been there just one night. I would be really nervous about leaving it there.

It comes with a bulldog wheel lock and a hitch lock, is that ok?
Check with your insurance company as to what they require - the premium will likely be steeper anyway if the trailer is to be stored in a field. They need to know that.

Trailers are going through a spate of being nicked again, unfortunately.

Does that include security and insurance for loss….I actually don’t know what prices are charged…
but some livery yards charge for trailer/lorry space…
I've called livery yards today, the only one I got through to was quite rude and said they couldn't imagine any livery yard would offer paid trailer storage for someone who was a non livery. Made me feel a bit rubbish about pursuing it tbh.

Not that is affordable. I just don't have another £100 a month in the budget unfortunately.

And to get most wheel clamps off just deflated the tyre or drive off ... If they want it they will take it though... A tracker may deter them
That's why I was thinking about the caravan winter wheels... would be a ball ache to steal with no wheels I would have thought.
