Has anyone used this at all?
My mare is on part loan... the girl comes up, rides for half hour and leaves, the other day she asked if i am going to put shoes on her. She is hacked out approx 3 times a week. I dont really think it is my job to muck out AND pay for everything! Im too soft... but dont want to say anything incase it causes bad feelings... what do i do!!
Why does she come up, ride and just leaves again, normally with a story of how she has to go and cook? (she has no kids to feed or i may understand!) She doesnt care for Misty at all, i want someone to look after her and care for her as if she is her own... whats wrong with these people! Am i asking too much.... How can i get commitment - Is it because i dont ask for any financial contribution at all?

You need to stop making it easy for this girl and write up a contract, with how much riding she can do, what her financial contribution is, and how much help you expect. The current 'arrangement' isn't working, is it?

Keratex does harden feet, but can make them brittle

If you mean keratex I find it very good.Short term only.
I cant believe you are letting her get away with that,I think she has a cheek.I had my horse on loan first and wanted to do everything for him .Looking after a horse is more to do with the care than riding .This girl needs a reality check. If you find it difficult to confront her how about a letter then you can explain fully how you feel and explain that you would appreciate some help with the chores and a contribution .You are entitled to some help after letting her ride your horse. Most people ask for half livery fees and half payment for shoes I think thats fair. She is taking advantage of your kind nature.

Your right, its not working and I really am too soft.. The arrangement is no good for misty, thats all i am worried about. Misty is a hard horse to ride (stubborn, keeps planting her feet and refusing to move...) So i am worried no-one will want to ride at all if i start demanding, she has been through about 8 sharers now as she is 'boring' but if someone actually committed for more than just one summer then im sure she would get better! ... ... (i dont think its me because i just leave them to get on with it and often dont even see them, and then moan to friends about the lack of commitment! )

I share and I wouldn't have the audacity to just turn up ride and go without doing my share of jobs etc. If she wants that she should go to a riding school.

...however you do need to make clear to her what it is that is expected and draw up a contract.

Is the mare in work for 3 x 1/2 hr per week? In which case I wouldn't have thought she'd need shoes or anything doing unless she has a specific problem?

Yeah, i dont think she needs shoes. She doesnt have any cracks or anything. Just wondered if hoof hardener mat help, the bridle tracks nowadays are so stoney too!! I think the council must come and sump loads of flints on the bridle tracks thinking it helps.

I dont think she will stick around if i do a contract and she has to do some work. Still i guess it isnt the end of the world as she isnt much help anyway. Funny enough she just text to say she isnt riding at 1pm with me afterall, maybe i should use that as an opportunity to text something back to her.... Like F$**off! Ha ha

I've used Keratex short term and it seemed quite good.
I have to say, my experience of loaning/ part loaning my horses has always been or at least ended badly, for the simple reason that no-one ever looks after your horse just as you would!! I have always ended up having the p*** taken as the 'loaners' KNOW that I would never let my horse suffer just because they couldn't be a***d to do a proper job of it I'm not a soft touch, but like you don't like bad feeling, so I've always ended up thinking its just easier for me to look after them on my own so I know where I'm upto... as my mum says, love all, trust a few, learn to paddle your own canoe!!

if she wants to just get on, ride then go...she should go to a riding school! For all that she is or isn't doing for you, it wouldn't be a bad thing if she went....she can't be helping you much? She isn't part loaning or sharing at all!! Get tough....she's taking the p**s....
If she can't look after your horse cos she has to cook, then again, she should be at a riding school....

My part sharer rides and does everything my girl needs for that day...mucking out, hay, water, turnout, bring in etc and she pays me a small amount a week as well....she likes to look after my mare, she says its all part and parcel of the 'horse experience' and she couldn't ride a horse 3 times a week at a riding school for what she pays me...and she turns up no matter what, even if she can't ride for some reason....

If she's sharing then on the days she rides she should do the jobs especially if she's not contributing towards costs. However if she's exercising your horse then I guess that's fair enough. What was the arrangement meant to be?

Re keratex - the hoof hardener is great when you've just taken shoes off. I swear by Hoof moisturiser in the summer. Stops their feets going britle.

My sharer mucks out etc on the days she rides, which is very helpful for me, plus he benefits from the extra riding and takes the pressure off me.
I used the keratex hoof hardener a few times but not for very long as i too heard it could make hooves brittle. You need to very careful with its application.

I put an advert in the paper for part loan/sharer or full loan. I stated that it wasnt just a 'free ride'. I explained she is stubborn and needs work but in return there would be no financial contribution or morning commitment needed, just the cost of shoes if she ever gets to that stage, when she came up she said she didnt mind mucking out and stuff.. so i guess i presumed she would do exactly that... muck out and 'stuff'! She has done nothing though, She must thinks it is great not having to do anything at all. I have both my horses where i live and it is nice to have someone to go out on a hack with, and i need someone on top whilst i lunge so she gets to grip with walking on when someone squeezes (she plants her feet and refuses to move on a hack) I feel she is taking the p***, but also need a hand so am scared to say anything. I did pay an instructor to come up and give me a hand but this worked out so dear 3 times a week!

Keratex - it did nothing for my horse's rubbish feet, I started using Conucrescine instead to get them to grow faster and stronger and it was so good it not only made my horse's feet harden up, it made my own nails strong too!
Sharing - my share owner had the same trouble as you. The woman got on well with Berlin but just literally rode, nothing else. B's owner told her to help or hop it, and the woman chose the latter. Lucky for me (and B's owner!) as now I share him, I do everything I can to help and ALWAYS muck out, I'll step in to feed the horses (there are four there, and I only ride two, but will do all of them) whenever needed etc. I pay nothing to B's owner for letting me ride, and she pays me nothing for exercising and schooling her horse, and it works out well really. We've been going for three months now anyway and I'm taking B two hours down the road to RC camp in April, so we must be doing something right! Don't forget it's still YOUR horse! I couldn't share my own horse, I'm far too protective!
